UPDATE: Funeral services set for ICC football coach

INDEPENDENCE — Funeral services have been set for Independence Community College head football coach Lamar James, who died Saturday morning, Nov 21, while visiting family in Mississippi.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, at the St. Mark’s Church of God in Christ in James’ hometown of Mound Bayou, Miss.  Burial will be at the Mound Bayou Memorial Gardens.

Family visitation will be at the T.L. Redmon Funeral Home in Cleveland, Miss., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 27.

ICC will hold a celebration of life in the coach’s honor on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and details are pending.

A fund to benefit Coach James’ family has been established and checks should be made payable to Cindy James and sent to the ICC Athletic Department, P.O. Box 708, Independence, KS 67301.

Coach James leaves his wife Cindy, a five-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son.

College officials received confirmation on Monday that James died of a heart attack.

James was visiting family in Mound Bayou, Miss., during the weekend when he was found early Saturday struggling for breath. He was transported to a hospital where he died upon arrival. It was determined on Monday, Nov. 23, that James died of a heart attack.

Just three weeks ago, James concluded his first season as the ICC Pirate head football coach, guiding the Pirates to a 2-7 season.
