4h1 COFFEYVILLE — Montgomery County 4-H members were saluted for their accomplishments at the 83rd Annual Montgomery County 4-H Achievement Banquet on Tuesday.

Held at Community Elemetary School, the dinner event attracted more than 150 4-H members and their families.

Three veteran 4-H members were given the coveted 4-H Key Award, which is given to the top one percent of all 4-H’ers in the nation. The award recipients include Zach Hershey of the Rambling Rangers 4-H Club, Shannon Blaes of the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club, and Craig Fentress of the Flying Frontiers 4-H Club.

First-year members who were saluted for completing their first year in 4-H were Brendan Anderson, Cord Dodson, Shaylee Boatman, Shanell Boatman, Meegan Dunham, Jacob Keene, Garrett Koslosky, Jared Metcalf, Kayla Maulsby, MacKenzie White, Coty Wilson, and Brandon Wilson.

cvaledellallencmyk1 MANHATTAN — A Liberty native and Cherryvale High School graduate was honored by Kansas State University last week for contributions to the meat industry in the United States.

Dell Allen, a 1957 graduate of Cherryvale High School and a 1961 graduate from Kansas State Univeristy, was recognized as the 2009 Animal Sciences and Industry Distinguished Alumnus during a day-long visit to campus on Friday, Nov. 6.

Allen, who taught at K-State for more than 22 years, received the award during an afternoon session attended by many of his former K-State co-workers, as well as current faculty and students. He then talked informally about his 40 years of experience in the U.S. meat industry - which includes service to Excel (now Cargill), the American Meat Science Association, Intervet-Schering Plough and others.

COFFEYVILLE — Additional concerns about a proposed housing development in downtown Coffeyville were aired by commissioner Jim Taylor, Sr., at Tuesday’s city commission meeting.

And, one other city commissioner said he was fed up with Taylor’s continued criticisms of the proposed development and city staff.

CHERRYVALE — A tentative agreement has been reached between the USD 447 Board of Education and the Cherryvale Teachers’ Association regarding a salary dispute that has led to a lawsuit.

The USD 447 board and CTA representatives met last Friday, Nov. 6, in a five-hour negotiation session that drew a compromise agreement. Tina Cunningham, USD 447 president, said she could not divulge full details about the agreement because it had not been approved by the CTA members. The CTA membership is scheduled to discuss the tentative agreement this week; the USD 447 Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, to vote whether to adopt the tentative agreement.
