CANEY — On Tuesday of this week, Caney Valley High School head football coach Criss Davis tried to keep an upbeat mood while putting away helmets, shoulder pads and jerseys.

INDEPENDENCE — The ever-popular soda fountain — once a staple of most Kansas main streets — is gaining renewed interest thanks to the Kansas Sampler Foundation.

The foundation, located in Inman, Kan., last week announced that the 38 remaining Kansas soda fountains were among the 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs.

And, one of those 38 soda fountains is found in Independence.

The Cherryvale United Methodist Church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar and Soup Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Fellowship Hall. The church is located at Third and Labette streets.

A king-size quilt, 87” X 100”, Golden Nine Patch, is being offered for $1 donation per ticket or six for $5.  The quilt was machine stitched by Louise Brothers and machine quilted by Johnna Kay Lain. Donation tickets are being sold by members of the United Methodist Women.

A winning ticket will be drawn the day of the bazaar, and you need not be present to win. Tickets will be available for you to purchase at the bazaar.

The public is invited to bring friends and enjoy the coffee time from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Beginning at 11 a.m., the ladies will serve vegetable beef soup, old-fashioned chicken rice soup, ham and bean soup and chili, with crackers or cornbread, home-baked pie and coffee. Bring friends and family and remember that soup refills are free. Quarts of soup will be available for take out at 11 a.m and will be sold for $4.
Doors will open at 8 a.m. to begin selling Christmas gifts and craft items.

The Cherryvale United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall is handicap accessible.

A Cherryvale man convicted of several sex crimes involving minors will spend the remainder of his life in state prison, a judge ordered on Tuesday.

At a sentencing hearing Tuesday in the 14th Judicial District Court in Independence, Judge Roger Gossard issued two life sentences to Grant Nixon, 21, of Cherryvale for aggravated criminal sodomy of a minor and sexual exploitation of a child.
