Edna Turner is no stranger to the Coffeyville community.

Raised in the community, educated at Field Kindley High School and Coffeyville Community College, employed as a teacher at Community Elementary School, and serving as a freshmen girls’ basketball coach at Field Kindley High School, Turner knows the community like the back of her hand.

She knows the language of the streets, knows many of the families of students who roam the school hallways, and has a knack for being involved in many school activities.

Today, Turner faces a huge task that puts the Coffeyville native in a unique position with her hometown: encouraging more parents to get involved in their children’s education.

The Harlem Globetrotters — perhaps the best-known and most-traveled sports team in the world — has a former Independence Community College basketball player as its main showman.

He’s Nathaniel Lofton — who goes by the nickname “Big Easy” based on his hometown of New Orleans — who wore the jersey of the ICC Pirates for the 2001-02 season. Following his one year on the ICC courts, Lofton played at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana University, where he led the team to an NCAA tournament berth.

COFFEYVILLE — Changes are underway at a Coffeyville-based cabinet manufacturer.

RSI Home Products, the Anaheim, Calif.-based parent company of Prestige Cabinets in Coffeyville, announced Tuesday that it was redesigning and launching a new kitchen cabinet line and will be discontinuing production of the Prestige brand by the end of 2009.
