A story in this week’s Montgomery County Chronicle regarding this Friday night’s varsity football game between Caney Valley and Yates Center has an error.   The game will be played AT Yates Center and not at the CVHS Stadium.   The Chronicle apologizes for the error.

MIAMI, Okla. — An Independence man was arrested in Ottawa County, Okla., early Monday in connection with the apparent kidnapping and rape of an Independence woman.

Garth S. Howell, 44, of Independence was denied bond on Tuesday during his first court apperance in Miami, Okla. Howell is accused with kidnapping and sexual assault of a female companion from Independence.

TYRO — Thirty years ago this month, a teen-aged Justin Riley of Coffeyville set out on a musical journey.

With guitar in hand and a warm microphone in front of him, Riley cut his teeth in the music industry when he performed at a country dance in nearby Nowata, Okla.

But, to Riley, it was like a trip to the moon.

And, the journey has not come anywhere close to ending.

That’s because the musical bug grabbed hold of an already musically-gifted Riley and set him into motion to become an accomplished country, gospel and bluegrass musician.

A Kansas Army National Guard unit in Montgomery County is slated for deployment to Afghanistan in late 2009 or early 2010, a National Guard spokesperson has confirmed.

Sharon Watson, a Kansas Army National Guard spokesperson, said the 226th Engineering Company, which includes a deteachment in Cherryvale, will be deployed to Afghanistan as part of the U.S. war on terrorism. The actual date of deployment has not been determined, she said, however the 226th Engineer Company will undergo training at Fort McCoy near Sparta, Wis., before being sent overseas for a one-year stint.
