A Caney Valley High School junior started the 2009-10 school year in high fashion . . . with a gold medal around her neck.

Mercades Price was the winner in the fashion construction competition at the Family, Career and Community Leadership of America (FCCLA) STAR events national contest in Nashville, Tenn., in July.

CHERRYVALE — A Cherryvale Middle School student has put her artistic pen to good use in hopes of alerting others about the importance of bus safety.

Danielle Duke, a seventh grade student at Cherryvale Middle School, was named the first place winner in the 2009 Kansas State School Bus Safety Poster Contest. Duke’s entry was the top pick in Division III, which includes 5th and 6th grades (Duke designed and entered the poster when she was a sixth grade student at Lincoln-Central Elementary School).

INDEPENDENCE — In case you feel a collective pull of hand muscles in Independence this week, it’s because the town is keeping its community’s fingers crossed with the announcement of the “America’s Best Tennis Town” set for Sunday night, Sept. 6, at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City.

Independence is one of three national finalists vying for the America’s Best Tennis Town award, with the winner receiving a $100,000 cash reward plus national bragging rights. The other two finalist cities are Midland, Mich., and Ojai, Calif.
