CHERRYVALE — Persons owning golf carts inside the city limits of Cherryvale will now be able to drive those carts on city streets under an ordinance that was approved by city councilors Monday.
Councilors voted 3-1 to approve the ordinance that will allow golf carts on city streets with conditions. Under the ordinance, golf carts will be prohibited on city streets with a speed limit in excess of 30 miles per hour, and golf carts will not be allowed on city streets between sunset and sunrise.
Persons operating a golf cart will be subject to the same applicable local, state and federal laws as drivers of conventional vehicles in Kansas. This includes having a valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance coverage. A $30 city license fee will have to be paid each year for the operation of a golf cart on qualified city streets.
A Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblem will have to required for display on all golf carts.
The new ordinance, which is printed elsewhere in this edition of the Montgomery County Chronicle, contains similar restrictions for golf cart usage on city streets as the ATV/MUT ordinance that was adopted by the city council in 2008.
Councilor Kevin Crain voted against adoption of the ordinance, while councilors Randy Wagoner, Chad Wickham and Lew Forman voted in favor of the ordinance.
