Several communities in Montgomery County are getting in the spirit of the nation’s 233rd birthday this weekend by hosting a variety of Independence Day events.
• Sycamore: The Sycamore community will hold its Eighth Annual July 4th Celebration on Saturday, July 4. Events will include a parade at 5 p.m., starting at the corner of U.S. 75 highway and Main Street.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the parade with whatever entry they wish, i.e. homemade floats, kids on bikes, four-wheelers, tractors, horses and anything else that moves down the road. Everyone is welcome to attend and sit in shade as the parade travels the streets of Sycamore.
At 7 p.m., the celebration continues with a cookout at the Sycamore Arena. Members of the fire department will cook hamburgers and hot dogs. Attendees are requested to bring side dishes and lawn chairs. A silent auction will be held to help with the cost of the celebration. Anyone is welcomed to bring an item to be auctioned off. Chances, for a money donation, will be sold for a 50/50 pot.
At dark, members of the fire department will present a fireworks display to conclude the celebration.
The Sycamore Fire Department sponsors the parade, cookout and fireworks. The public is invited to attend.
• Independence: As if the town name isn’t appropriate enough, Independence’s July 4th fireworks display will be held at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, July 4 (in case of rain, the display will be held at 9:30 p.m., Sunday, July 5). Fireworks will be ignited north of the Kiddie Land area at Riverside Park. Spectators can find ample areas in the Riverside Park area in which to view the fireworks show, which should last about 25 minutes. Music for the show will be broadcast on KIND (102.9 FM).
What is being labeled as a “Communitywide Old-Fashioned 4th of Ju ly” will be held at the John Palmer farm, located at U.S. 75 highway and east of county road 5000 (follow signs). Events will begin at 3 p.m., with games, including horseshoes, paddle boats, volleyball, hayrides, softball and more. At 5:30 p.m., a picnic will be held with hot dogs, hamburgers and table service being provided. Spectators are asked to bring a side dish or homemade ice cream.
At 7:30 p.m., the Cole Family will present a bluegrass concert. The events will end at 9:30 p.m., with spectators watching the Independence fireworks display.
• Coffeyville: A spectacular fireworks display will highlight the 4th of July Celebration to be held Saturday, July 4, in Walter Johnson Park. Evening activities get underway at 6 p.m. with a car and bike show, music by the Retro Rockerz and kids activities sponsored by the Coffeyville Police Department Dare Program. The Roadhouse Smokers will take the stage leading up to the fireworks display approximately 9:30 p.m.
During band break, Torey Smart will perform, and while supplies last there will be free ice cream provided by Allgeier Martin, Italian Ice provided by CRMC and bottled water provided by Grace Fellowship Church. Concessions will be available throughout the afternoon and evening from the Red Cross and Kiwanis.
All activities, including the music, will be held in the park. Following the traditional fireworks show coordinated by Cactus Hills, the Roadhouse Smokers will play until 11 p.m. The City of Coffeyville and Radio Results Group sponsor the 4th of July Celebration.
