BREAKING NEWS: Coffeyville man arrested after Thursday standoff with police

The Coffeyville Police Department is reporting the arrest of a 31-year-old man after a standoff on Thursday evening (May 28).

Commander MIke Brown said Oranda Westley Hughes, 31, of 1321 W. 9th was arrested after surrendering in a standoff that began when Hughes apparently battered his girlfriend.

Brown said local police were called to the 1300 block of West Ninth at about 5:15 p.m., after receiving a report of gunshots in that area. Upon arrival, police were informed that Hughes had battered his girlfriend, who subsequently fled the apartment.  Hughes then fired multiple rounds from an assault rifle in an unknown direction. Officers then concluded that Hughes was holed up in his upstairs apartment.

Officers began setting up a perimeter around the area and evacuating residents in the area, Brown said. The Coffeyville Police Department’s Special Operations Team was activated and additional assistance was requested from surrounding agencies. While the perimeter was being established, the suspect fired three additional rounds. Once the perimeter was established, negotiators contacted the suspect utilizing a public address system. Hughes responded to the negotiators and surrendered to officers.

Brown said Hughes is being recommended to be charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal threat, domestic battery and criminal discharge of a firearm.

Brown also commended the work of the Coffeyville Police Department as well as other agencies that assisted with the incident: Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Independence Police Department, Cherryvale Police Department, Coffeyville Fire Department, Coffeyville EMS and the American Red Cross.

“The successful outcome of this dangerous incident was due in no small part to the willingness, cooperation and professionalism of every agency involved,” said Brown.
