UPDATE: Body recovered from Verdigris River

Montgomery County Sheriff Robert Dierks said Tuesday that the body of Maurice E. Elias, 56, of Coffeyville was recovered from the Verdigris River at about 6:40 a.m., Tuesday morning in an area along the Verdigris River where the man was reported missing late Saturday night.

Elias was fishing with an 11-year-old nephew at about 11:30 p.m., Saturday when Elias climbed down the river bank to the water’s edge to help land a fish that had been caught. According to reports, after reaching the waters edge, Elias lost his footing and fell into the river, which was at elevated levels due to recent heavy rains. After entering the water, Elias was not seen again, said Sheriff Robert Dierks.

Sheriff Dierks expressed his sympathy to the Elias family and wished to thank all of the agencies for their cooperation and continued support during this effort. Dierks also wished to thank Coffeyville Resources as well as the Red Cross for their support and assistance.
