SALINA — Caney Valley High School freshman Hunter Stalford stood atop the medal podium at the class 4A state wrestling tournament Saturday night to wear the gold medal at the 103-pound division.
Stalford won the state championship after winning four straight matches at the class 4A meet.
He finishes his first-year season in the varsity ranks with a 40-2 record.
Jake Price, 171-pound senior, ended the tournament on a disappointing note. Although he settled for fifth place in his weight bracket, Price was denied a shot at the state tournament title — a position he has longed for in three previous trips to a state wrestling tournament.
More wrestling information will be included in the March 5 edition of the Montgomery County Chronicle.
