Criminal charges filed against a Caney funeral home director and his wife have been dropped by the Montgomery County Attorney.

Larry Markle, county attorney, said Tuesday that he will not pursue criminal charges against John and Angela Keath of Caney. The Keaths were arrested last month by Sheriff Stan Veach and charged with criminal theft based on initial reports from Shawn Parcells, the former owner of the now-defunct Parcells Family Funeral Home and Crematory of Caney. The Keaths were hired by Parcells to manage the local funeral home before its closure last year.

“Further investigation and documentation from independent sources were obtained by the county attorney’s office, Markle said. “The investigation revealed that the representations made by Mr. Parcells were not true and that the Keaths are innocent of all charges.”

Today is Election Day in the United States, where a record number of voters are expected to cast their ballots in a variety of pivotal races that will direct the nation’s future.

Topping the election ballot is the race for U.S. president, where two major parties have chosen John McCain, a Republican U.S. senator from Arizona, and Barack Obama, a Democrat U.S. senator from Illinois, are expected to lock horns in a tight race that might not be decided until late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

In Kansas, voters will pick a U.S. senator and members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

In Montgomery County, a two-man race for county sheriff has evolved into a three-man contest. Robert Dierks, the Republican winner from the August primary election, is facing Jerry Gilbert, a Democrat Party nominee. Both are from Coffeyville. However, incumbent sheriff Stan Veach is vying for re-election is a write-in candidate.

Among the other contested races are two races for the Kansas House of Representatives, Kansas Senate, and 14th Judicial District judge.

Listen to KGGF (690 AM) tonight for election results beginning at about 8:30 p.m. Chronicle editor Andy Taylor will be broadcasting live from the Montgomery County Courthouse with the early results.
