Jack E. Mosler

GROVE, Okla.—Jack E. Mosler, 82, of Grove, Okla., passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009, at St John’s Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the Murdock Funeral Chapel in Oswego with Rev. David Shrum officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oswego. Memorials may be made to Grove Integris Home Health or Grand Lake Humane Society with the Murdock Funeral Home, 203 Illinois, Oswego, KS 67356 serving as custodian. Jack was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Chetopa, Kan., the son of Vernie and Frances Isabel (Silkey) Mosler. He farmed in Cherokee County, worked for Freeto Construction Co, Layton Oil Co and retired from KAAP in 1993.

Jack married Wilma “Billie” Raetz on  June 5, 1949, in the Labette Methodist Church in Labette. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 5, 2009.

He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed  camping, traveling and fishing.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Elva Shrum, and two brothers, Leonard and George.

Those surviving are his loving wife, Billie, and pet  “Heidi” of the home in Grove; two daughters, Jacqueline Caywood and husband Don of Parsons, Kan.; and Lori Ann Shryock and husband Brent of Augusta, Kan.; three sons, Dennis Mosler and wife Shelley of Owasso, Okla., Douglas Mosler of Grove; and Daniel Mosler of Fairland, Okla.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Brannin of Oswego; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Mosler of Hallowell; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Lillian V. Korinek

OSWEGO–Lillian V. Korinek, 91, of Oswego, Kan., passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Presbyterian Manor in Parsons.

Graveside funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Oswego Cemetery with Rev. Tom Heflin officiating. Interment will follow in the Oswego Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, in the Murdock Funeral Home, 203 Illinois, Oswego.

Lillian was born July 2, 1917, in Black Wolf, Kan., the daughter of Charles and Anna (Homolka) Kroboth. She married Charles Korinek on July 26, 1939. The couple lived in Ellsworth, Abilene, and Ft. Scott, before moving to Oswego. She was a member of the the Willowdale Methodist Church Talmage, Kan.

She enjoyed sewing and being involved with her grandchildren and family.

Those surviving are three sons, Arthur and wife Nancy of Oswego; Eldon and wife Pam of Ft. Scott; and Arnold of Oswego; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding Lillian in death were her husband and two sisters.

Ralph Dean Olinger

PARSONS—Ralph “Dean” Olinger, 70, of Parsons, Kan., Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Freeman Heart Institute in Joplin, Mo.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 19, at Harrison Cemetery, rural Thayer.

COLUMBUS—Mary Maxine Myers, 87, of Columbus, Kan., died Saturday, March 14, 2009.

Harold L. Parsons

PARSONS—Harold L. Parsons, 101, of Parsons, Kan., died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Elmhaven West nursing home in Parsons.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at Faith United Methodist Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends at Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Jane Mawhiney Warbinton

ANTHONY—Jame M. Warbinton, 83, of Anthony, Kan., formerly of Altamont, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Wichita.

Funeral services were held Feb. 9 at the First Congregational Church in Anthony. Burial was in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

Susan Carol (Watts) Duncan

ANTHONY—Susan Carol (née Watts) Duncan, 63, of Anthony, Kan., died March 13, 2009, at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. In addition to many other family members, she is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Faye Watts, Oswego.

Catholic Services were held Wednesday, March 18, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Danville, (Harper County) Kan., of the St. Joan of Arc Parish Community, with Recitation of Rosary at 1:30 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m., all with Father Michael Peltzer officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Danville, Kan.

Memorials in memory of Susan may be given to the Sacred Heart Altar Guild, Anthony, or to the Shriner’s Orthopedic Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

William “Bill” E. Taylor

COLUMBUS—William “Bill” E. Taylor, 78, of Columbus, Kan., died Sunday, March 15, 2009.

M. Marcella Braley

OSWEGO—M. Marcella Braley, 89, of Oswego, Kan., died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at Labette Health.

Marcella was born Aug. 24, 1919, in rural Bartlett to Luther A. and Eva (Thompson) Wiley.

She graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1939. She received her teaching certificate from Pittsburg State Teachers College and later earned her master’s from Pittsburg State University. She taught rural school at Liggett and Ellis and taught at Oswego schools for 40 years.

On Nov. 25, 1942, she married Gene Braley. He preceded her in death in April 1996. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, arts and crafts and quilting.

She was a member of Oswego Presbyterian Church and the Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club. She was a charter member of the Oswego Arts Society.

Survivors include four sisters, Imogene Miller of Bernice, Okla., Wintress Stine of Bartlesville, Okla., Darlene Thomas of Bartlesville, Okla., and Luvonne Hucke of Mound Valley; a sister-in-law, Betty Wiley of Oswego; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Nadine Barr; and a brother, Milan Wiley.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, at Oswego Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery, Bartlett. Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego, is in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie D. Guy

COLUMBUS—Bobbie D. Guy, 74, of Columbus, Kan., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin.

Velma (Thomas) Giltner

PARSONS—Velma (Thomas) Giltner, 92, longtime Parsons, Kan., resident, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Parsons Presbyterian Manor.

Katherine P. “Kay” Taylor

PARSONS—Katherine P. “Kay” Taylor, 90, of Parsons, Kan., died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the Family Health and Rehab Center in Wichita. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. Taylor, on May 25, 2002.

Stanley L. Terril

HONOLULU, Hawaii—Stanley L. Terril, 74, of Honolulu, Hawaii, formerly of Altamont, Kan., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Queens Hospital, Honolulu.

He is to be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean off-shore of Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.

PARSONS—Lovetta M. Webb, 85, of Parsons died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at Labette Health.

Vinetta L. Chickadonz

PARSONS—Vinetta L. Chickadonz, 89, lifelong Parsons, Kan., area resident, died at 4:28 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Labette Health in Parsons, where she entered Friday.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Dennis United Methodist Church, with Revs. Kris Brinlee and Jim Dillow officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, near Dennis. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday.

Vinetta was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Parsons, to Ralph and Reba (Russell) Brown. Her father was fatally injured in an accident when she was four years old and she was raised by her mother and step-father, Oran V. Mathis.

She attended Parsons and rural elementary schools, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1937 and from Parsons Junior College in 1939.

On Feb. 1, 1941 she married Charles Leo Chickadonz at Erie. After their marriage they lived in Galesburg briefly and then moved to Dennis. Mr. Chickadonz preceded her in death on April 29, 1982, a year after their 40th anniversary.

She cared for her family and was a homemaker in the early years. Later she was employed at the Hallmark Card Company and other manufacturing companies. For 12 years she worked as a church secretary and also was secretary to the district superintendent of the United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Dennis United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and was church pianist for over 40 years. She was a member of the Big D Senior Citizens group and the GNO Club of Dennis. She loved her church and her friends and enjoyed playing the piano, reading and playing card games. She especially liked watching the birds from her kitchen window. She loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren. She enjoyed living near her daughter Judy and visiting her daughter LaVon in California.

Those surviving are two daughters, LaVon Walker and husband Larry, San Gabriel, Calif.; Judy Thompson and husband Roy “Sonny”, rural Parsons; grandchildren, Brenda Risner and husband Jeff, Ruckersville, Va.; Becky Thompson, Overland Park, Kan.; Brad Thompson, Lemoore, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Mason, Naomi, Anya and Emma Risner, Ruckersville, Va.; Elena Thompson, Overland Park; brothers, Marvin Mathis, Newton, Kan.; Russell Mathis and wife Beverly, Parsons; sisters, Freida Conrad, Parsons; Nadine Stevenson, Parsons; and a brother-in-law, David Kimrey, McCune.

Preceding her in death was a sister, Patty Kimrey, and two step-brothers, Homer Mathis and Howard Mathis.

William S. “Bill” Ramsey

PARSONS—William S. “Bill” Ramsey, 84, of Parsons, Kan., died at 10 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at his home.

At his request there will be cremation and no service. Eventually he will be buried at the Oswego Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Babe Ruth Baseball Association or the Parsons Youth Crisis Center. They may be left at or sent to the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.

Bill was born Aug. 7, 1924, at Chetopa, to Julius C. and Marchie Edith (Blundell) Ramsey. He attended school in Chetopa untl 1934, when the family moved to Oswego. He graduated from the Oswego High School and the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill.

He was inducted into military service with the United States Army on June 18, 1943. During World War II, he served with the 1901st Engineer Aviation Battalion and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged on March 13, 1946. Later he joined the 930th Ordnance, which was activated on Aug. 14, 1950. Later he was transferred to the 357the Ordnance Co. at Fort Sill, Okla., and was then sent to Germany. He was discharged on Oct. 14, 1952.

His employment had included Galvin’s I.G.A. Store and Williamson’s Furniture in Oswego, Ankortite Products and White Electric in Parsons and C. & H. Electric in Parsons, which he purchased in 1974 and managed until he retired in 1984, due to ill health.

Bill was a member of the Church of the Brethren and of the I.B.E.W. #226, which he served as local business manager. He was active in American Legion baseball, serving as a manager, and was active in bowling leagues and the Parsons Katy Golf Club. He worked as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts and taught electricity classes at Labette Community College and electrical apprentice schools for the I.B.E.W. He was a life member of the Brown-Bishop Post # 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On Dec. 17, 1944, he and Ramona J. Edwards were married at Labette City. They had lived in Parsons since 1950 and recently observed their 64th anniversary.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona J. Ramsey, of the home; two daughters, Jacque Lynn Ramsey, Denver, Colo.; Michele McCready, Parsons; daughter-in-law, Margie Ramsey, Parsons; grandchildren and their spouses, Melanie and Marc Neighbor, Overland Park, Kan.; Doug and Sweta Ramsey, Dallas, Texas; Michael and Jessica Ramsey, Parsons; Katherine and Joe Esposito, Parsons; Samuel McCready, Parsons; great-grandchildren, Chloe Neighbor, Kailee Ramsey, Atticus Ramsey, Jonas Ramsey, Blake McCready, Isabella Ramsey, Michael Ramsey, Jr., Katie Florence and Ashtyn Esposito.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Kenneth Owen Ramsey, on April 22, 1948; and Richard Ray Ramsey on July 25, 2000; a a great-granddaughter, Raylen Brook Ramsey, on Dec. 15, 2000, and twin great-grandsons, Damien James and Brian Wayne McCready, on Nov. 25, 2002.

Katherine Littlejohn

CHETOPA—Katherine Littlejohn, 77, of Chetopa, Kan., died at 11:18 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at the Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Katherine was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Parsons, Kan., to Bert and Goldie (Reno) Martin. She grew up and attended schools in Parsons and was a graduate of Parsons High School.

For a time, she worked as a teacher’s aide at Lincoln Elementary School in Parsons.

She was an avid collector of Hallmark ornaments and a member of the Hallmark Collector’s Club. She was also an accomplished painter and was known for her tole paintings. In earlier years, she attended the Church of the Nazarene in Parsons, and most recently had attended the First Christian Church in Chetopa.

She and Walter Littlejohn were married Oct. 19, 1951, in Bentonville, Ark. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Tina Littlejohn, Fairway, Kan.; one brother, Jack Martin, Parsons; and two sisters, Ruby Elliott, Parsons; and Betty Horton, Parsons.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Walter Thomas “Tom” Hale

MORRILTON, Ark.—Walter Thomas “Tom” Hale, 66, of Morrilton, Ark., passed away, Monday, Jan. 5, 2009.

There will be a celebration of remembrance from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Fish Lake Club. Tom was born Dec. 18, 1942, in Oswego, Kan., a son of John Bash and Neva Bash. Tom was an avid golfer, OU fan, and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He was past president of Morrilton Lions Club and Morrilton Country Club, member of Fish Lake Club, was with Arrow Automotive for twenty-five years, and was an Insurance Broker with Hawkins Insurance Agency. Tom was also a Vietnam Army veteran and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Charlene Benjamin Hale of Morrilton; sons, William T. (Bill) Hale and wife Andrea of Little Rock; Todd Hale and wife Suzette of Wellington, Fla.; and grandchildren, Olivia, Jillian, and Ryan.

Clarena Taylor

COLUMBUS—Clarena Taylor, 82, of Columbus, Kan., passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at the Maude Norton - St. John’s Hospital in Columbus.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2at the Simpson Funeral Home in Columbus with Rev. Tom Goettel officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Columbus. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m,. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the funeral home.

Clarena was born April 5, 1926, at Coweta, Okla., the daughter of Alvin and Elizabeth (Hall) Hodge. Clarena will always be remembered for her great pies and apple dumplings.

She married Frank Crosby in 1944; they later divorced. Then she married the love of her life, Max Taylor, in 1965 in Columbus. He survives of the home.

She attended the Center Christian Church of rural Columbus.

Additional survivors include three sons, David Crosby of Kansas City, Kan.; Philip Crosby and wife Mary of Columbus; Keith Crosby and wife Christina of Owasso, Okla.; three daughters, Sandra Stanley and husband Buck; Louise Robnett and husband Gary, all of Columbus; Terri Knoell and husband Don of El Dora, Iowa; and a son-in-law, Dick Glasgow of Columbus; two sisters, Olive Winter and Lillian Whan; 18 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and loving daughter, Laura Glasgow, two brothers, Howard and Beacher, one grandaughter and one great-grandson.

Linda Kay Freeman

WELCH, Okla.-Linda Kay Freeman, 66, of Welch, Okla., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009.

Ronald Wayne Lewis

COFFEYVILLE—Ronald Wayne Lewis, 63, Coffeyville, Kan., resident, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008 at St. John Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla.

Ron was born May 6, 1945, at Boynton, Okla., to John Paul Lewis and Delia Alice (Leist) Lewis. He moved from Boynton to Tulsa in 1950, and began his education in Tulsa. Halfway through his kindergarten year, Ron moved to Coffeyville as his parents took jobs with Continental Can. He attended McKinley, Lowell and Clymore Schools. Ron attended Labette County Community High School where he played football and basketball and ran track. After high school, he was offered a track scholarship at Coffeyville Junior College and also walked on the Red Raven Football team.

On Aug. 1, 1965, Ron married his high school sweetheart, Dixie Lee Schell, at Altamont, Kan. Afterwards, Ron enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was stationed for a time in El Paso, Texas, where he was a part of the Nike Hercules Warhead Air Defense Missile group. Ron was stationed at several locations, eventually winding up in Athens, Greece, where he was joined by his bride.

After two years in Greece, the couple returned to El Paso and later to Coffeyville in 1968. After his military service, Ron resumed his job with Funk Mfg/John Deere where he was a tool setter. He worked 39 years for the corporation before his retirement. In 1977, the Lewis family moved to the “farm” in Labette County, where he has been a resident since.

Ron enjoyed all sports and played industrial league fast pitch softball for Funk and other teams. He was an avid bowler and golfer and loved to hunt. Ron was big hearted and would do anything for anybody. He was a member of Grace Fellowship and taught Sunday School. Ron was a Mason, a Shriner and a true follower of Red Raven football and LCHS Grizzly sports.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie, of the home; two daughters, Ronda Rohling and husband Jim of rural Mound Valley; and Amy Gregory and husband Kevin of Collinsville, Okla.; and six grandchildren, Katie, Brice, Jake and David Rohling and Vince and Alexis Gregory.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Funk.

Funeral service will be held, 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 26, at Grace Fellowship Church with Rev. Gerald Morris officiating. The family will have a reception following the service with a committal at 1 p.m., Friday at North Edna Cemetery, Edna, Kan., under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Friends may call Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mary Lee Triebel

EDNA—Mary Lee Triebel, 86, of Edna, Kan. died at 4:20 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the Oswego Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the First Baptist Church in Edna. Burial will be in the Edna Elm Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.

Mary was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Edna, to J. I. and Nettie Velma (Storm) Wester. She grew up and attended school in Edna, graduating from Edna High School in 1940.

She and Elmer H. “Buck” Triebel were married June 7, 1941, in Weir, Kan. Following their marriage, she lived with her parents while he served his country during World War II. Upon his return from the war, they moved to their rural home, near Edna, where they raised their family and had lived since. For 21 years, she was employed as a bus driver for U.S.D. 506, retiring from there in 1992.

She enjoyed crafts, quilting, baking, fishing and bird watching. She also did custom wallpapering for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edna, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Cunningham Chapter in Edna; E.C.O., and the Edna BEARS (Better Edna Area Relief and Support).

Those surviving are two sons, Doug Triebel and wife Sue, Coffeyville; and Sam Triebel and wife Kathy, Coffeyville; one daughter, Julie Jack and husband Phil, rural Edna; a former daughter-in-law, Sharon Triebel, Edna; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer H. “Buck” Triebel, on Nov. 12, 2005; four brothers, Robert D. Wester, H. Leon Wester, T. E. Wester, and Billy I. Wester; and two sisters, Rosaline Parker and Katherine Roberts.

VINITA, Okla.–Christopher L. “Chris” Ahrens, 23, of Vinita, Okla., formerly of Chetopa, Kan., died from injuries suffered in an auto accident Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, outside of Vinita.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego. Burial will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.

Chris was born Oct. 29, 1985, in Bartlesville, Okla., to Lawrence P. and Rose Mary (LaCaria) Ahrens. He grew up and attended schools in Chetopa. He had worked for General Mills and was currently employed at Allied Marine in Langley, Okla.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chetopa.

Survivors include three sons, Trenton Ahrens, Shawn Ahrens, and Colton Ahrens, all of the home; his fianceé, Stephanie Keith, of the home; mother, Rose Mary Ahrens, Welch, Okla.; three brothers, Gene Ahrens and wife Mary, Tucson, Ariz.; Glen Ahrens, Tucson, Ariz.; Gary Ahrens and wife Carrie, Eagle, Wisc.; and Stephen Ahrens, Welch, Okla.;two sisters, Cindy Porter, Welch, Okla.; and Carolyn Tullis, Oswego, Kan.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father on Oct. 11, 2000.

Helen Mingle

OSWEGO—Helen Mingle, 93, of Oswego, Kan., passed away Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Sunset Manor in Frontenac, Kan.

Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, in the Oswego Cemetery with Pastor John Stone of the First Baptist Church officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Murdock Funeral home at 10 a.m. for a time of visitation before proceeding on to the cemetery as a group for services.

Helen was born April 18, 1915, near Richland, Mo., the daughter of Alvin and Anna (Beckley) Sprecher. At the age of seven, she moved with her family to a farm west of Altamont, Kan. She graduated from Altamont High School in 1933 and then moved to Oswego.

She married Howard E. Mingle on Feb. 1, 1936, at Oswego and he preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1973. She clerked in several stores in Oswego including Torcia Hardware for 14 years. Helen retired in 1986 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oswego.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Carlos Bradfield of Pittsburg, Kan.

Kathryn Lee Woodman

PARSONS—Kathryn Lee Woodman, 55, of Parsons, Kan., died at 5:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at her home. She was in failing health.

PARSONS—Richard F. Rice, 76, of Parsons, Kan., died at 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo., following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at the funeral home.

Richard was born Jan. 17, 1932, in Lawton, Okla., to Roscoe H. and Mary Alice (McDivitte) Rice. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Altus, Okla., where he grew up and attended schools. Following high school, he attended Oklahoma State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree.

He worked as a lineman for REA Electric in Floydada, Texas, before moving to their farm in Parsons in June of 1956, where he had lived since. He farmed throughout his adult life. He also ran an avionics radio repair shop in Coffeyville. He was a deputy sheriff in the 1960s and was a diver on the Labette County search and rescue team. For a time, he also worked as a lineman at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant.

On Nov. 22, 1951, he married Kathleen Roberts in Altus. She preceded him in death Oct. 27, 2007.

He taught hunter’s safety many years, was a ham radio operator, and enjoyed photography. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Swing and Twirl Square Dance Club. He also served on the Planning Commission and Zoning Board for the City of Parsons.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Taylor, Parsons; Nancy Kessler and husband Dwight, Altamont; grandchildren, Daniel Bussinger and wife Lisa, Parsons; Crystal Middleton and companion, Dr. Harold Blankenship, Carl Junction, Mo.; Duane Kessler and wife Peyton, Parsons; Jason Kessler, Dallas, Texas; Kayla Crabtree and husband Daniel, Zushi, Japan; Lindsey Dameron and husband Tony, Pittsburg, Kan.;Leslie Kessler, Wichita; four great-grandsons; one brother, David H. Rice and wife Margaret, Texarkana, Texas; one sister, Mary Ruth Miles, Sedona, Ariz.;

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Robert Rice, Sept. 20, 2004; and one son-in-law, Winston Taylor, Aug. 8, 2007.

Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Shideler Hinckley

HILLIARD, Ohio—Mary Elizabeth Taylor was born July 12, 1905, in Oswego, Kan., and departed this life recently at the Glenmont Care Center, Hilliard, Ohio. She was 102 years of age.

Her remains were cremated and will be interred at the convenience of the family.

Mary was the eldest daughter of Arthur Ray Taylor, who was the third generation of the Taylor family to operate a jewelry store in Oswego, and his first wife, Elizabeth May (Lizzie) Perkins.

Mary attended and graduated from the Oswego school system and during her high school years taught the kindergarten Sunday school class at the Oswego Presbyterian Church.

Her adult years were spent being a mother and as a classroom teacher for 40 years. During her teaching years in the Kansas City, Mo., schools, she developed a citizenship project for junior high school students. It was adopted for use throughout the system and was the basis of her receiving a “Teacher of the Year” award from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, Penn.

Following her retirement from teaching, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Christian Science Reading Room in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her mother in 1922, her father in 1961, and younger sister, Catherine Lucile Taylor Weiser in 1941. Also preceding her in death was her first husband, Harry Kenneth Shideler; their first son, Jack, who died in East Africa while working as a correspondent for a national newspaper; their second son, Jerry, who was killed in an auto accident while returning to duty at Ft. Riley, Kan.; and by her second husband, Horace Hinkley.

She is survived by her youngest son, Richard, wife Tara and their son Taylor of Fairbanks, Alaska. Taylor will enter The University of Alaska Fairbanks this fall as a freshman. She is also survived by her nephew, Taylor Quay “Bud” Weiser of Stevensville, Mont., who she helped raise after the untimely death of his mother; a cousin, John Donald “Cy” Perkins of Hood River, Ore.; and multiple cousins in the Wobbe, Karns, Benitz and Perkins families.

Irene L. Hale

COLUMBUS—Irene L. Hale, 73, of Columbus, Kan., passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Medicalodge of Columbus.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, rural Columbus, Kan.

Irene was born Feb. 17, 1935, in Cherokee County, the daughter of Fred Zachery and Marchie (Sprouse) Stapleton. She graduated from Oswego High School in 1953.

Irene was married to Perry Harrell and later divorced. She later married Ray Hale on July 18, 1979. She worked at the Labette County Courthouse as a clerk, for several automotive dealerships as a bookkeeper and was also very active on the farm. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oswego, VFW Ladies Auxillary and volunteered at the Cherokee County Genealogy Society.

Those surviving are her husband, of the home; a son, Terry Harrell and wife Sherry, Altamont; a daughter, Teresa Troy, M.D. and husband Richard, Ozark, Mo.; a step-son, Tim Hale and wife Lori, Bentonville, Ark.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lula Mae Villegas, Oswego; Martha Testerman and husband Arno, Bartlett; and Rachel Nance, Rolla, Mo.; two brothers, Chester Stapleton and wife Peggy, Oswego; and George Stapleton and wife Phyllis, Oswego.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Turner Harrell; two brothers, Leo and Guy Stapleton; and a sister Ruby Strickland.

May Warwick

OSWEGO—May  Warwick, 101, of Oswego, Kan., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at the Oswego Home Place.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Oswego Cemetery with pastor Eddie Williamson officiating. May may be seen between 1 and 6 p.m. on Thursday. Family and friends will gather at the Murdock Funeral Home at noon on Friday for a time of visitation before proceeding on to the cemetery as a group.

May was born Aug. 5, 1907, in Sipsey, England, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Kendall) Brown. She moved to Oswego about 45 years ago to be with family. She was married to Cecil George Warwick who preceded her in death on May 12, 1983.

She worked for Berry Garment Factory for several years.

May was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and three brothers.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Strickland of Oswego; three grandchildren, Andra Gamba and husband Guy, Broken Arrow, Okla.; Carl Strickland and wife Cathy, Oswego; and Wanda Strickland, Tulsa, Okla.;  four great-grandchildren; four great-great-granddaughters, two great-great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.

Darlois ‘Kay’ Burkhart

MOUND VALLEY—Darlois “Kay” Burkhart, 48, of Mound Valley, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at her home.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mound Valley Cemetery.

Laura “Jean” Chesnutt

CHETOPA—Laura “Jean” Chesnutt, 95, of Chetopa, Kan., passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at Oswego Medical Center in Oswego, Kan.

Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug.20, at Lake Creek Cemetery with Pastor Randy Frazier officiating.

Jean was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Carthage, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Margaret (McLean) Tullis. She graduated from Altamont High School in 1931 as Co-Salutatorian of her class. She attended Kansas State Teachers’ College in Pittsburg and taught for nine years in local rural schools.

On May 9, 1940, Jean married Horace M. Chesnutt of Chetopa. The couple operated the Chetopa Farm Auction during the 1940s and 1950s.

Mrs. Chesnutt is survived by a daughter, Myrna Chesnutt of Chetopa; a son, Jerry Chesnutt of Chetopa; a grandson, Cody Chesnutt and wife Erin of Chetopa; two great-grandchildren, Kristen Chesnutt and Austin Chesnutt of Chetopa; three step-great-grandchildren; Sarah, Katie and Sione Daniels, all of Chetopa.

She was preceded in death by her husband Horace in 1996; a brother, George Tullis of Bartlett; and a sister, Lottie Apperson of Welch, Okla.

Richard “Dale” Hoppock

BARTLETT—Richard “Dale” Hoppock, 81, of rural Bartlett, Kan., died at 12:55 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Oswego Community Hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 15, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery, rural Angola. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Dale was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Mound Valley, to Elmer and Mary (Eastabrook) Hoppock. He grew up there and was a 1944 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

He and his father farmed together for a number of years before he began his 42 year career as a bus mechanic and bus driver for USD 506. He retired from there in 1991.

Dale enjoyed rebuilding old furniture, fishing, gardening and tending to his flowers. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

On June 28, 1947, he married Helen Forrester in Oswego, Kan. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include two sons, Steve Hoppock and wife Georgia, Dearing; and Randy Hoppock and wife Brenda, rural Altamont; one daughter, Gayle Peoples and husband Jim, Altamont; 11 grandchildren, Cindy and Cory Eads, Russiaville, Ind.; Christy Cibes, Altamont; Jennifer and D. J. Winters, Mound Valley; Scott and Kristen Shaw, Altamont; Katelynn Hoppock, Chicago, Ill.; Ross Hoppock, Council Bluff, Iowa; Chris Nelson, Dearing; Tiffany and Jaret Drummond, Parsons; Brandy Hoppock, Parsons; Ryan and Shianne Hoppock, Edna; and Steven Hoppock, Altamont; seven great-grandchildren, Devin Plain, Christopher Eads and Dakota Eads, Russiaville, Ind.; Chase Winters, Chance Winters and Faith Winters, Mound Valley; and Marissa Drummond, Parsons; one sister, Dorothy Abshier, Afton, Okla.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, a daughter, Cheryl Cibes, in 1988; and one grandson.

Eldon W. Huffman

ALTAMONT—Eldon Wesley Huffman, 76, of rural Altamont, Kan., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Elmhaven West Nursing Home in Parsons. Betty, his wife of 53 years was by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Altamont Christian Church with Pastor Lewis Regis officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont. Friends may call at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont after 1 p.m., Friday.

Eldon was born in Pittsburg, Kan., on Dec. 22, 1931, to Claude Irvil Huffman and Florence Mildred (Smith) Huffman. He was married to Betty Jac Reece on July 29, 1955, at the Thayer Christian Church in Thayer, Kan.
He attended Pittsburg Public Schools and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1950. He received his bachelor of science degree in education in 1954 and his master of science degree in 1959 from Kansas State Teacher’s College of Pittsburg. He was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1954. He was vice-president of his senior class, and was also president of the Young Men’s Christian Association, chairman of Religious Emphasis Week and a member of the debate team.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Eldon became student counselor at Wellington High School. He then became counselor at Labette County Community High School in Altamont for six years. He retired as counselor and foreign student advisor in 1992 after twenty-six years at Labette Community College. There, he served as president of the LCC Faculty Association and president of the Kansas Association of Higher Education. He served ten years as a city councilman in Altamont and president for one year of the recreation association which built the Altamont swimming pool.

He was baptized by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of his sins at the First Christian Church in Wellington, Kan., in 1957. His service to the Lord continued at the Central Avenue Christian Church in Parsons where he served as deacon. He became a member of the Altamont Christian Church in 1975 where he was an elder, teacher, church board member and youth leader. He considered it the rarest of privileges to have contributed hands-on labor in the construction of the church building.

Eldon had a great passion for sports. He participated as a child in baseball, basketball and tennis through the Pittsburg community programs and the YMCA. He won honors at KSTC as a four year letterman in track. He also played on the varsity tennis team. While serving in the U.S. Army in Japan, he was named to the All-Japan Softball Team and competed in the far east tournament. His life-long effort was coaching and furnishing equipment for community and church teams. His last project, which was done from his wheelchair, was the repair and renovation of the basketball goal and furnishing new equipment for the teen recreation room at the fourth street property of the Altamont Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; a son, Curtis, of Altamont; two daughters, Jana Unruh and husband Jim of Overland Park, Kan.; and Nancy Tebbe and husband Chris of Belton, Mo.; six grandchildren; three brothers, Don Huffman of Pella, Iowa; David Huffman of Bothell, Wash.; and Claude Huffman of Longview, Wash.; and one sister, Lillian Truman of Irvine, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ted Huffman; and a sister, Virginia Scott.

Lorene R. Pee

CHETOPA—Lorene R. Pee, 87, a lifelong resident of Chetopa, Kan., died at 12:32 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Labette Health in Parsons.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m.., Monday, Aug. 18, at the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery in Chetopa. Friends may call at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Chetopa after noon on Sunday.

Lorene was born Nov. 19, 1920, on a rural Chetopa farm, a daughter of Robert S. and Savilla (Viney) Caldwell. She attended Cook School and Chetopa High School.

She first met her husband, Clarence Pee, when he came to the family farm with a harvesting crew. After dating for several years, they were married May 6, 1938. He preceded her in death in July of 1979.

Following their marriage, Lorene, a homemaker, started babysitting. She had great love and pride in the children she cared for during the 41 years of babysitting. Even though she retired in 1991, she loved “all” her children until her death.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Her hobbies were sewing, quilting and craftwork. She enjoyed her family and her home.
Those surviving are three grandchildren, Paula Green, Michael Tyler and Lisa Olivarez-Silvey; four great-grandchildren, Raven Olivarez, Adriean Castro, Derek Green and DeLaina Green; one sister, Ruby Yost, Chetopa; and one niece, Verda Maude Littlejohn, Chetopa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Frankie and James Pee; one daughter, Peggy Tyler; three brothers and five sisters.

Oren Douglas Roberts

ROUND ROCK, Texas—Oren Douglas Roberts, a resident of Round Rock, Texas, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at age 94.

Doug was born on May 14, 1914, in Elix, Okla., the son of Bert Clarence Roberts and Henrietta (Athey) Roberts. Doug was orphaned at age 10 and lived a difficult life as a child, moving from farm home to farm home during the depression years. Through personal perseverance, Doug received a BS at Pittsburg Teachers College, Pittsburg, Kan., and became Principal of the West Mineral Grade School.

Doug married Katherine (Wester) Roberts in Edna, Kan., on Sept. 12, 1936. They had two children, James Douglas Roberts and Dolores Ann (Roberts) Gish.

After Doug served in the US Navy during WWII, the family moved to Manhattan, Kan., where Doug completed an MA degree in Education at Kansas State University. He taught algebra and math for 33 years at the Manhattan Junior High School.

He and Katherine were faithful members of the First Baptist Church. Doug also managed the Manhattan City Swimming Pool and the Rock Springs 4-H Ranch during several summers. He was an ardent fisherman and gardener and he spent many happy hours at his woodworking bench. Katherine preceded in death.

In 1979, Doug moved to Ogden, Utah, to live with his daughter, Annie. There, he met and married Anne Searcy in 1981 and they enjoyed an active life together until her death in 1996.

Thereafter, Doug lived near his daughter, Annie, in Round Rock, Texas, where he met and married Janette Kester in 1999. They were good company for each other and enjoyed many mutual interests together. Doug was a beloved member in each family gathering. Going fishing and playing checkers with Granddad was a special joy for him and his great grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic attendee to the Round Rock Express baseball games.

Doug is survived by his wife, Janette; daughter, Annie Gish; sister, Lois Turner, Round Rock; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Doug was predeceased by his wife, Katherine Dolores; wife, Anne Searcy; son, Dr. James Douglas Roberts; father and mother; sister, Hattie Mae Jones; brother, Edward Chancey McGinnis; sister, Nola Faye Yates; sister, Nora Edith Yates; and brother, Olin Whitson Roberts.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hope Alliance Crisis Center, 1011 Gattis School Road, Ste 106, Round Rock, TX, 78664, are suggested.

Connie Marie (LaVelle) Holsteen

PARSONS—Connie Marie (LaVelle) Holsteen, 58, of Parsons, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peggy Hillmon officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

Burton R. Taylor

COLUMBUS—Burton R. Taylor, 86, of Columbus, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.

Gary Lee Stice

TULSA, Okla.—Gary Lee Stice, 53, of Tulsa, Okla., died from a heart attack on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008. Gary was a 1972 graduate of Labette County High School, Altamont.

A memorial celebration service will be in mid-September. Ninde Funeral Directors of Tulsa is in charge of arrangements. The family requests memorials to the American Heart Association.

Imogene Mead

CHETOPA—Imogene Mead, 86, of Chetopa, Kan., died Friday Aug. 15, 2008, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher, Okla. Joe Fry will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Services are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher.

Orpha Elizabeth Randall

COLUMBUS—Orpha Elizabeth (Simpson) Randall, 86, of Columbus, Kan., Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the Medicalodge in Columbus after an illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Simpson Funeral Home in Columbus with the Pastor Susan Brey-Daniels. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the funeral home.

Mildred J. Brown

CHETOPA—Mildred J. Brown, 78, of Chetopa, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Brown, June 17, 2008.

PARSONS—Arthur B. Cuddy, 49, of Parsons, Kan., died at Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at his home. He was in failing health.

Maurice Ray Conway

PARSONS—Maurice Ray Conway, 92, of Parsons, Kan., formerly of Fairfield, Ill., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Elmhaven West in Parsons.
