A group of third grade students from Oswego’s Neosho Heights Elementary School are shown with Sean Sullivan of Pittburg State University’s Biology Nature Reach Program.  Sullivan is holding a Prairie Kingsnake. An Oswego High School student was pronounced dead at approximately 11 p.m., Monday, Feb. 7, according to Oswego Police Chief George Elliott.
The student was identified as Mark Allen Carter III, 17, whose address was 1101 Brad St., Oswego.
At this time there is no suspicion of foul play however the death is under investigation by the Oswego Police Department.
A grievance council was been set up at the Oswego High School where Mark was a student.

The 2011 Oswego Chamber of Commerce membership drive is now underway.

The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 28, at the Oswego Community Center. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a dinner, short business meeting, acceptance of officers, and an informational program. After a  year in paperwork, Marvin and Dorothy Wahl were able to recently purchase the former Daylight Donut building at 902 W. Sixth St. in Oswego.
They are having the weekly Oswego Rotary Club meetings there. This Tuesday was their fourth meeting. “It was recently approved for the Oswego Rotary Club to meet every Thursday at noon, so more people can come to the meetings. We really need more members, everyone is welcome to join - you just have to be a civic-minded person and care about the community,” Marvin said. Read more

Armando Johnson, head men’s basketball coach at Labette Community College was keynote speaker at Saturday’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the Oswego Community Building. Johnson was also recognized as the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award recipient. Floyd F. Cavitt, Jr., master of ceremonies and program chairman for the annual event, and Pat Landis, a guest speaker, listen as Johnson shares how opportunities for accomplishment and helping others in his own life may be traced back to advances made by Dr. King. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, at noon at the Oswego Community Center. The keynote speaker will be Labette Community College Head Basketball Coach Armando Johnson.
Other speakers will be Martha Gatewood, Oswego Mayor Tom Bringle and Former Mayor Philip Blair, Reverend Roy Russell and Chetopa Former All-State Football player, Rod Armstrong. The invocation will be given by Rev. Riley Cartwright. Read more
