Herbert Stanley Swearingin
SIMI VALLEY, Calif.—Herbert Stanley Swearingin, 84, of Simi Valley, Calif., died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Simi Valley Methodist Church, 2394 Erringer Road, Simi Valley, with graveside services Nov. 3, at the Arroyo Grande Cemetery, Arroyo Grande, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either the Community Presbyterian Church, 990 Dolliver St., Pismo Beach, CA 93449, or the Simi Valley United Methodist Church, 2394 Erringer Road, Simi Valley, CA 93065.
Herb was born June 23, 1924, in Hallowell, Kan., the son of Doris and George Arthur Swearingin., one of eight children.
Herb went to school in Columbus, Kan., graduating from Cherokee County Community High School, Columbus. He joined the U.S. Navy at the beginning of World War II. He was in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Pierce and was an engineer aboard a landing craft. He had made eight landings by the end of the war.
After the war, he moved to California and worked as a ceramic tile setter. In 1967, he went to work for the Department of Water and Power, City of Los Angeles. He retired June 1, 1987.
On May 26, 1962, he married Melba Philbrick.
Survivors include his wife, Melba; two daughters, Tami Swearingin, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Sally Klingenberger of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a son, Frank Smith, Elgin, Ill.; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; a brother, C. W. “Bill” Swearingin, Dewey, Okla.; and two sisters, Opal Overman, Oswego; and Doris Ekhoff, Oswego.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Bertha Jones
OSWEGO—Bertha Jones, 97, of Oswego, Kan., passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Oswego Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oswego, Kan.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Oswego Cemetery with Phil Hays of Oswego Christian Church officiating. Visitation will be Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Murdock Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. on the day of the service for a period of visitation before preceding to the cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oswego Christian Church in care of Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.
Bertha was born April 11, 1911, in Jackson, Ky., to Robert and Sarah (Back) Hall. She worked for the KOP during World War II. She was a wonderful cook and worked at several restaurants in Oswego. Bertha was a very loving mother and will be missed by her children and family.
Survivors include four sons, Leroy and Sally Jones, Brownfield, Texas; Marvin Jones, Morse, Texas; Leon and Judy Jones, Brownfield, Texas; and Larry and Pat Jones, Shiloh, Ill.; four daughters, Barbara Jones, Chanute; Alice Davis, Oswego; Vickie and James Callus, Montana, Kan.; and Pamela and Karl Stammer, Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Virginia Simone, Oswego; and Ruth Carrendar, Manhattan, Kan.; 25 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Wayne Jones, in 1974; three brothers and two sisters.
Irene Augusta (Raasch) Bachman
COFFEYVILLE—Irene Augusta (Raasch) Bachman, 81, of Coffeyville, Kan., passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 2008 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 16, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Coffeyville with Rev. Richard Peckman officiating. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park.

Irene was born Aug. 17, 1927, at Lahoma, Okla., to Theodore and Katherine (Wienberg) Raasch. She moved with her family to Valeda, Kan., in 1938 where she completed her education, graduating from Labette County High School at Altamont in 1945. After completing high school, she was employed at Condon National Bank.
On June 4, 1950, she married Leonard Bachman at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville.
Mrs. Bachman worked at the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce from 1979 until retiring in 1996.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Priscilla Guild, CRMC Auxiliary (Pink Lady) CRC Square Dance Club, and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Mrs. Bachman enjoyed sewing, bowling, and playing cards.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Bachman of the home; one son, Ronald Bachman and wife Marlene of Coffeyville, Kan.; two daughters, Linda Cook and husband Dan of rural South Coffeyville, Okla., and Carol Wehmeyer and husband Gerald of rural Coffeyville; and five grandchildren, Brian Bachman, Mark Bachman, Chad Cook, Melissa Cook, and Brent Wehmeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Earl, Elmer, Erwin, and Ray Raasch; and one sister, Selma Liermann.
Elmer F. Reddick
PARSONS—Elmer F. Reddick, 72, of Parsons, Kan., died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society of Parsons. He had been in failing health.

Theobell Campbell
PARSONS—Theobell Campbell, 77, longtime Parsons, Kan., music teacher, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons. Death followed a lengthy period of failing health.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, with Rev. Ron Pracht officiating. Burial will be later at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Mo.
