Voters will go to the polls next Tuesday, Aug. 5, to pare down the candidates in numerous county, state and national elections.
The primary election polls will open at 7 a.m. and remain open until 7 p.m. Results will be posted on the taylornews.org website as soon as they are made available to Labette Avenue.    At the county level, incumbent commissioner Brian C. Kinzie is being challenged by fellow Republicans Pamela I. Oakley, Altamont, and Lowell Scott, Mound Valley. No Democrats have filed for this 2nd District position.
Republicans Rick Hizey and Jack W. Martin, both of Parsons, will compete for votes in the 3rd District county commissioner race. This is the seat formerly held by Jerry Carson who died July 19.
Running for county offices with no opposition are Linda Schreppel of Oswego (Republican) for county clerk; Crystal Addis of Oswego (Democrat) for county treasurer; Donna Strickland of Oswego (Democrat) for register of deeds; Hillary Haas of Erie (Republican) for county attorney; and Williams C. Blundell of Oswego (Republican) for county sheriff.
In state legislative races, incumbent senator Dwayne Umbarger of Thayer, a Republican, is being challenged by Iris M. VanMeter of Thayer, also a Republican, and David L. Miller of Parsons, a Democrat. This is for the Kansas State Senate 14th District.
Richard J. Proehl of Parsons, a Republican, is running unopposed for his incumbency as State Representative in the 7th House District.
Jerry D. Williams, Democrat, of Chanute, is running unopposed for the 8th District State Representative position which he currently holds.
U.S. Sen. Roberts of Dodge City, a Republican, is being challenged by two Democrates, Lee Jones of Overland Park and Jim Slattery of Topeka.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda of Topeka, a Democrat, is being challenged by two Republicans, Jim Ryun of Lawrence and Lynn Jenkins of Topeka. The winner of the Republican race will meet Boyda on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
Numerous township officials will be listed on the ballot, as well.
Since Labette Avenue now goes to press on Tuesday evenings, election results will not be available before the newspaper’s deadline. Results will be posted at taylornews.org.

Two races for county commissioner in Labette County, all on the Republican ticket, will result in a primary election run-off to be held Tuesday, Aug. 5.
The deadline to file for county, state and congressional offices was Tuesday at 12 noon.
County elections clerk Becky Czapansky said the following races would comprise this year’s elections in Labette County:
Second Dist. County Commissioner Brian C. Kinzie, incumbent, will be challenged in the Aug. 5 primary by Pamela Oakley of Altamont and Lowell Scott of Mound Valley.
In the County Commission Dist. No. 3, two Republicans have filed: Rick Hizey of Parsons and Jack W. Martin of Parsons. The incumbent for that position, Jerry Carson, did not file for re-election.
All other Labette County elected officials will run with no opposition. They include the following:
• Linda Schreppel, Labette County Clerk, Republican.
• Crystal Addis, Labette County Treasurer, Democrat.
• Donna Strickland, Labette County Register of Deeds, Democrat.
• Hillary Haas, Labette County Attorney, Republican.
• William C. Blundell, Labette County Sheriff, Republican.
In other races affecting Labette County residents, incumbent State Sen. Dwayne Umbarger, Republican from Thayer, drew two opponents: Democrat David L. Miller of Parsons, and Republican Iris VanMeter of Thayer.
That race will require VanMeter and Umbarger to meet on the Aug. 5 primary ballot before facing Miller in the Nov. 4 general election.
Incumbent State Rep. Richard J. Proehl of Parsons, a Republican, drew no opponent this time for House Dist. No. 7, nor did incumbent State Rep. Jerry D. Williams of Chanute for House Dist. No. 8.
For U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Nancy Boyda, a Democrat, will be challenged by two well-known Republicans, Lynn Jenkins and Jim Ryun.
For the U.S. Senate, incumbent Pat Roberts will be challenged by two Democrats, Lee Jones and Jim Slattery.

Donna Strickland has filed for her fourth term as Labette County Register of Deeds.
Before her election to office she also worked 12 years in the elections office of the county clerk.
The Register of Deeds works on land records, deeds, mortgages, ordinances from cities, death certificates and miscellaneous records,
Schreppel will run for her seventh four-year term in office. She previously worked in the county clerk’s office as payroll clerk
“I have enjoyed very much serving the citizens of Labette County,” Shreppel said.
The clerk’s office is responsible for the entire payroll and human resources for the county, as well as handling general bookkeeping and overseeing elections.
The clerk also serves as clerk to the board of county commissioners and an array of miscellaneous duties.
