Chetopa beats economic odds with local projects

In the midst of all of the news about the bad economy, there is a bright spot on the horizon. The small town of Chetopa is beating all odds with progress and improvement.
Pictured above is the new community center being built near the river. It will be a great asset to the community to have a place to meet and have individual activities.
Last week the Labette Avenue carried a story about the new multipurpose locker room and concession stand building at the football field on the west side of the highway going into Chetopa from the north and west.
A few weeks ago, the renovated pool was featured just in time for the Fourth of July event in Chetopa.
A new skateboard park has been developed for the kids on the south side of the school complex.
A new clinic associated with the Oswego Community Hospital has been completed and is awaiting the grand opening and final touches.
David Carter, pharmacist at Riggs Drug Store, is breaking ground for a new drug store on the corner of Maple Street and U.S. Highway 59  going south to Welch, Okla.
Chetopa City Clerk Toni Crumrine said several other projects surfaced as being part of Chetopa’s future–namely, a $3 million dollar sewer project with $500,000 community development block grant funds; a home grant application has been made for a housing program.
On that note, a house in the Hornet’s Addition is available for sale–a three bedroom, two bath listed for $72,500. As soon as this house is sold, another one will be built. This is the third or fourth house in that addition.
Chetopa remains a thriving community and provides an example of a never-quit attitude that inspires all.
