Robert L. Wood
MIAMI, Okla.—Respected farmer and rancher, Robert L. Wood, 78, of Miami, Okla., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at the Oklahoma Veteran’s Center in Claremore, Okla., after an illness.
There will be a visitation for family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Thomas Funeral Home, Welch, Okla.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20, at the Thomas Funeral Home, Welch, Okla., with Pastor Jeff Martin officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Melvin, Willie and V. O. Morgan, Mike Fitzpatrick, Chas and Sam Wood.
Interment will be at Williams Timberhill Cemetery, east of Welch.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oklahoma Veteran’s Center in Claremore, Okla., in care of Thomas Funeral Home, P. O. Box 231, Welch, OK 74369.
Services are under the direction of Jim Thomas, Thomas Funeral Home, Welch.
Robert was born May 21, 1932, in Miami, Okla., to Otis and Ellen Lois (Malone) Wood. As a young child, he attended Mound Valley School Route #3 Miami, and was a graduate of Miami High School. After graduating, he attended NEO A&M College in Miami, obtaining certificates in refrigeration and air conditioning.
He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country from 1950 until 1954. On May 11, 1963, he married Carolyn Sue Shields in Miami, Okla. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2007.
Robert was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Norman Wood; and one sister, Joyce Broderick.
Those surviving are one son, Robert E. Wood, Miami, Okla.; one daughter, Debra S. Kabrey and husband Kent, Chetopa, Kan.; five grandchildren, Mikel and Chas Wood; Erica, Erin and Lane Kabrey; three brothers, Charlie Wood, Alaska; Jim Wood, Fairland, Okla.; and Jack Wood, Welch, Okla.; two sisters, Jeannie Stephenson, Welch, Okla.; and Mary Stanley, Miami, Okla.; many other loving relatives and a host of friends.
Vernon Edwin Miller
TULSA, Okla.—Vernon Edwin Miller, 88, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Mound Valley, Kan., died at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at the Tulsa Nursing Center in Tulsa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 23, at the United Methodist Church in Mound Valley. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.

Vernon was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Benton County, Iowa, the seventh of eight children, to Philip J. and Emilia (Buettner) Miller. He was a graduate of Vinton High School in Vinton, Iowa. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Army where he defended his country 44 months in the Field Artillery.
In February 1946, he returned to the United States from the Philippine Islands and married his sweetheart, Shirley Johnava Bradbury, on March 17, 1946. After marriage, he joined the Bradbury Motor Company with his father-in-law, John R. Bradbury. His family lived in Mound Valley until moving to Denver, Colo., in 1970.
While living in Colorado, the family enjoyed fishing, hunting and exploring the mountains. Vernon loved traveling and had visited all 50 states in the United States as well as Canada, Mexico and several countries in Europe and the Pacific. Following his retirement in 1987, they moved to Grove, Okla., and in 2000 to Tulsa when Vernon’s health began to fail.
He was a member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church, a 50-plus year member of the Masons and a 32nd degree member of the Ft. Scott Consistory.
Survivors include his ever-loving wife of 64 years, Johnava Miller, of the home, Tulsa; two grandchildren, Michael Miller, Dallas, Texas; and Michelle Mann and husband Eddie, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Seboldt, Van Horne, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by one son, Wallis Kent Miller in 2007; and two infant daughters, Shirley Kathleen and Nicola Jane Miller.
Juanita A. Good
PARSONS—Juanita A. Good, 90, of Parsons, Kan., and a former Altamont, Kan., resident, died at 12:57 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010 at Labette Health in Parsons.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.

Juanita was born on Sept. 20, 1919, on the family farm near Thayer to Harley F. and Ella (Bicknell) Newland. She attended the Newland Community School and graduated from Altoona-Midway High School in 1937.
She and Paul E. Good were united in marriage on June 6, 1937. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1991.
Juanita lived in Parsons until 1972 when she moved to Salina. She moved back to the area, where she resided in Altamont, when her husband retired in 1979. She moved to the Woodridge Estates Apartments at Parsons in 2006.
A faithful and devout Christian, she was a member of the Altamont Christian Church where she played the organ.
She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed needle work. She loved music and sang in the Parsons Community Choir. She also enjoyed baking, dancing, and animals. She served on the Altamont Housing Board and the Altamont Fine Arts Club.
Those surviving include one son, Don Good and wife Catherine, Chocowinity, NC; two daughters, Carolyn Loncarich and husband Jim, rural Oswego; Pam Good, Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Diane Journot and husband Mike; Lisa Miller; Janet Hapner and husband David; Jami Shipp and husband Tony; Lori Moore and husband Chris; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one brother, Harley Newland and wife Lynda, Wichita; and many other extended family members.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Nancy J. Brawley
OSWEGO—Nancy J. Brawley, 59, of Oswego, Kan., died Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Labette Health in Parsons. She had been in failing health, but death was unexpected.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 at Murdock Funeral Home Chapel in Oswego with Pastor Randy Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Swars Prairie Cemetery south of Seneca at 1:30 p.m.
Murdock Funeral Home of Oswego is in charge of arrangements.
Nancy was born Aug. 28, 1950, at Seneca, Mo., to Lee Roy and Hazel Lorene (Huston) Cook. She attended Hart School near Seneca and Bluejacket schools in Bluejacket, Okla.
She loved to crochet items to give to family and friends. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She was baptized in the Baptist Church at Timber Hill, Oklahoma.
Nancy was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Carol Cook, and one nephew, Elvis Cook.
Those surviving are five brothers, Jimmy Cook, North Miami, Okla.; Travis Cook and wife Carolina, Mulberry; Raymond Cook and wife Jean, Oswego; Joe Cook and wife Mary; Arma; and Billy Cook and wife Cheryl, Rogers, Ark.; three sisters, Flora Morgan and husband Ray, Vinita, Okla.; Ruth Woolman, Oswego; and Celia Simmons and husband Tom, Oswego; her beloved black poodle, “Bingo,” who was her life; her special friend, Terry Hoffman, Oswego; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anita L. Jameson-Middlebrook
CHETOPA—Anita L. Jameson-Middlebrook, 54, of Chetopa, Kan., died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg. She had been in failing health.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 23, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience from noon until 8 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
