There were no surprises in Tuesday primary election results on the local level as Lonie Addis secured the Democratic nomination for Labette County Commissioner. His name will be the only one listed on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
Incumbents Richard Proehl and Jerry Williams both won their parties’ nominations and will go into the general election unopposed.
In other races affecting Kansans, Lynn Jenkins claimed a solid victory over Dennis Pyle to gain the GOP nomination in the U.S. House of Representatives, Dist. 2. Jenkins pulled 40,951 votes while Pyle got 30,736. Jenkins will meet Democrat Cheryl Hudspeth who won the Democratic party nomination for U.S. Senate.
Jerry Moran claimed a close victory over Todd Tiahrt to gain the GOP nomination in the U.S. Senate race. Moran pulled 159,658 votes votes while Tiahrt got 143,816 with 10 precincts still out this morning. Moran will meet Democrat Lisa Johnson who pulled ahead late in the night to win the Democratic party for U.S. Senate. Read more

Tough economic times and a tight budget have caused Labette County Commissioners to reduce payroll by canceling the Office of Emergency Management which is headed by Jim Cook. In addition to his work in emergency management since 2005, Cook also has served as a coordinator for the commissioners. His last day of work will be Aug. 31, according to minutes of the budget meeting held last Friday. Read more

The 4-H and FFA premium sale at the Labette County Fair was a record-breaker with $82,850.00 in premiums and $40,548.32 in bids.
