Corn harvest is going at a good clip this week in Labette County as farmers try to beat the rain storms that are forecast for the coming days. Photographer Verda Nisly snapped this photo as she drove to town on Monday. Local farmers aren’t complaining about corn prices and most yields are looking pretty good.

Two tire bids were accepted at Monday’s county commission meeting. Sandy Krider, Road and Bridge Supervisor presented bid sheets to the three commissioners. Ozarko Tire of Joplin, Mo., received the low bid for six 16-ply Michelin tires for the Mack truck at $411.40 each making the total $2,468.40. This will be paid out of the special bridge funds.
The other low bid was awarded to Cross Midwest Tire of Pittsburg for 10 steer tire Michelin for a dump truck with a bid of $400 each making the total cost $4,000 for the 20-ply tires.

The First Baptist Church would like to invite all children to a “Back to School Bash,” Sunday, Aug. 29, beginning
at 2 p.m.
There will be games, bounce houses, snacks and fun for all. Included are the TeamKid program and the “Mighty Messengers, Too“ children’s choir beginning Sunday night, Sept. 5.
The children’s choir (for ages four years old through sixth grade) will begin work on their Christmas program. An adult must accompany a four year old. Choir meets Sunday evenings from 5 to 5:50 p.m. Following choir practice at 6 p.m., the Team-Kid discipleship groups meet. There is a group for three years old through kindergarten and another for first through sixth grade. They have a great time together learning through Bible study and activities.
Everyone is invited.

When Chetopa head football coach Sean Price steps up to the sidelines at the Hornet’s first game, Sept. 3 in Chetopa, it’ll be his first at the helm of an eight-man squad.
He hopes to finish the season on the sidelines of a district championship game, or beyond.

Oswego and Chetopa kids aged K-8th grade who are interested in playing intramural youth soccer this fall may still sign up by calling 620-795-2293 right away. The season lasts 4-5 weeks and games are Saturday mornings in Oswego. Practices are held weeknights in Oswego.
Cost is only $3 per child; uniform “pinnies” are provided. It is recommended that players use shin guards and have a size four soccer ball to practice with.
Coaches are also needed; knowledge of soccer is helpful but not necessary. Game rules, drills and other information is available. The youth soccer league is sponsored by the Oswego Recreation Commission.
