Fair visitors can enjoy some free musical entertainment and special activities for youth at the Labette County Fair in Oswego. The Cole Family will help kick off Tuesday night activities on July 27 with their special blend of bluegrass music and gospel. They will be onstage at the Larry Allen Family Pavilion starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Cole Family from southern Labette County includes Orin and Retha Cole and sons Brad and Travis along with Kevin and Lynette Cole and their sons Madison and Logan. This entertainment is sponsored by Altamont Builders Supply and Labette County Farm Bureau. Read more

fairSkies are clear and temperatures are running close to 100 degrees each day — the essence of fair time in Labette County.
The 99th annual Labette County Fair is set to begin Sunday, July 25, and run through Saturday, July 31, and pre-fair events have already begun.
The clothing revue and judging was held Tuesday, and food exhibit judging will get underway Thursday, both of them held in Altamont.
The official fair set-up is set to begin Monday with superintendents and helpers putting the final touches on the fair exhibit building. Read more

Two  principals’ positions were filled Monday, July 19 at a special USD 504 board of education meeting.
Following the resignation of Rod Wittmer, high school principal, the board approved the transfer of Cynthia Sanders from the Neosho Heights principal’s position to the high school principal’s position. The board then reassigned Janie Allison from her current Title I teacher position to the Neosho Heights principal’s position.
Also approved were activities director positions: Andy Fewin, high school and Neal Cruise, middle school. Read more

Two employees of Foley Tractor CAT rebuild program talked to the Labette County Commissioners at Monday’s meeting on possible cost-saving measures of rebuilding versus buying new road and bridge equipment.
Sandy Krider, road and bridge supervisor and Richard Johnson and Rodney Warren presented facts and figures regarding rebuilding three of the county’s large equipment, a loader a truck and a motor grader. No decision was made at this time. Read more

A standoff between law enforcement and a 24-year-old male in Edna ended without incident Saturday night.
Undersheriff Robert Sims said the Labette County Sheriff’s Department was notified shortly after 9 p.m., Saturday of a domestic disturbance at 101 S. Elm in Edna. Law enforcement were informed that the domestic disturbance involved a weapon.

The Labette Health Foundation awarded scholarships this year to 19 area students for a total of $17,250. Foundation President Brian West, Tom Macaronas, Labette Health Interim CEO, and Rod Landrum, Executive Director presented each recipient a check and challenged the students to excel in their respective health related careers. This year is the largest recipient class to receive scholarships from the Labette Health Foundation and to date the Foundation has granted $89,300 to local students.

Twenty-seven Kansas high school students will be joining youth from Colorado, Oklahoma and Wyoming at the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp, July 17-23 in Steamboat Springs, Colo., including Jennifer Nelson, Twin Valley Electric of Altamont.

K-State Research and Extension will host a 1-day SERVSAFE food safety manager’s certification course on Monday, Aug. 16.  The class will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Labette Health, 1st floor, North Conference Room, 1902 U.S. Highway 59, Parsons.
The instructor will be Kylie Ludwig, Labette County K-State Research and Extension Agent.
