Labette County Commissioners directed the county counselor Fred Johnson to file an appeal for unemployment compensation with the Kansas Department of Labor at Monday’s meeting.
As deputy county treasurer, Peggy Minor understands that the county is eligible to appeals this government rating for unemployment insurance premiums. In 2009 the county paid $4,500 for unemployment insurance. The appeal is based on the correctional facility that the county ran and was compensated by the state. Since these facilities have been closed by the state the commission believe they have a right to file the appeal of the 7.71 percent increase. The commission would have to budget $258,726.82 in additional expenses using the 7.71 figure.
The departments could budget using 4.0 percent premium rating would be based on the first $8,000 per employee, non-elected personnel is excluded as the contributing rate by the end of November.
IN OTHER ACTION taken at Monday’s meeting:
• Signed a resolution for licensed contractors in the county to install sewer systems, there will be three grandfathered in.
• Approved for Debbi Baugher, Health Dept., Director, to get a technology and business assessment of their computer system. The technical assessment would be hardware and software inventory, utilization scores and network health scores and more. This would provide information for improvements, replacements and upgrades. The business assessment would interview key employes as to what type of issues they are experiencing, how they use the computers to do their jobs, etc. It would also provide an estimated costs of downtime for the department. The cost of the assessment wold be $1,500. Baugher said she would be using the remainder of grant money for this project.
