New movie includes Carrico and riders

Area residents will find some familiar faces when they go see the Warner Brothers movie, “Hex,” which opens this coming weekend across America.
David Carrico of Edna was involved with the production in its early stages, designing the holsters to be worn by actor Josh Brolin, and also providing most of the gunleather, cavalry saddles and cavalry equipment.
“I worked closely with the propmaster to design the holsters, making sure the producers and Josh were comfortable with them,” said Carrico who owns Carrico’s Leatherworks in Edna.
Starring in the movie are actors Josh Brolin who plays Jonah Hex, Will Arnett as Lt. Grass and Megan Fox.
Since the character is based on a comic book series, producers were more concerned about that sort of match, rather than worrying so much about historical authenticity, Carrico said.
The movie company also needed riders for a group of militia who would be featured in the film, so six area men traveled to Louisiana last year to shoot specific scenes involving the cavalry.
In addition to Carrico, other area riders included Will Rosson of Valeda, Brian Allison from South Coffeyville, Matt Messner from Caney, Paul Steed from Pomona and John Reed of Topeka.
In addition to his leatherworks company, Carrico also owns “Western Trooper Productions.”
“We provided a package deal of man and horse, all equipped with uniforms, props, saddles, tack and weapons,” said Carrico. “We were camera-ready for the movie producers.”
He said such a package saves production companies time and money so they like it a lot.
“When you act like a professional, you are treated like one,” said Carrico, noting that his local riders have always been treated well by movie companies.
David has been involved in show business since “Son of the Morning Star,” in 1990. In the past few years he has supplied saddles, tack, gunleather and other leather gear for various movie and television casts.
His saddles were used in “3:10 to Yuma,” “Appaloosa,” “The Alamo,” “The Missing,” and the remake of “True Grit.”
He also has made holsters and gunbelts for lead actors like Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Brolin, Brad Pitt, Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.
