Memorial Day services are planned

The following area cemeteries are having activities in recognition of Memorial Day:
Chetopa - The VFW and VFW Auxiliary will have a service on Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery south of Chetopa.
Edna - Flags will be raised at the North Edna Elm Grove Cemetery on Memorial Day.
McKee Cemetery - Memorial Day Services will be held at McKee Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. The public is invited. Phillip Dark, a retired U.S. Army Chaplain from Tulsa, will conduct the services.
Oswego - The Avenue of Flags will be put out on Monday, May 31, at 6:30 a.m. The VFW post is looking for volunteers to help raise the flags. A service will be held at 9 a.m. with Marine Sgt. Lonie R. Addis as master of ceremonies and Rev. Phil Hays of the Oswego Christian Church conducting services.  Army 1st Sgt. Duane Strickland will present the VFW wreath and Im Alexander will carry the Auxiliary wreath.
The firing squad will be commanded by Army Sgt. Carl Wayne Strickland and squad members will be Special Forces Master Sgt. Ted Hornung and Marine Cpl. Stephen McClure.
Volunteers are sought to help take up the flags at 5 p.m. on Monday. Contact Lonie Addis at 795-2826 if you can help.
Sherman City - Woodsong, an old tyme stringband, will perform on May 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sherman City Baptist Church. They will honor Memorial Day.
