Oswego High School sophomore Whisper Cormeny intends to “use the common language of sports to bridge the continents” as she travels to Australia to compete against Aussie and American track and field athletes with the Down Under Sports organization this summer.
Cormeny has run track for Oswego since she was in seventh grade, when she competed as a miler. Now a two-miler, she holds the current school record of 12:34 in that event.
Her invitation to join the Down Under team was instigated by a coach at last spring’s state track meet where Cormeny ran for OHS.
Down Under Sports coordinates travel to Australia and competitions there for US athletes in various sports to encourage multicultural interaction, sportsmanship and adventure, all alluring aspects of the venture for Cormeny.
“I’m ready to test my skills and ways of running against other teens and see how I do,” said Cormeny. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me.”
Cormeny is fundraising to finance her trip to the southern hemisphere. Her family and friends will host a pulled pork dinner at the Oswego Community Building on Feb. 6; admission is by donation.
Several local businesses have already extended financial support to the ambitious athlete.
Cormeny is the daughter of April and Ed Cormeny. Her OHS track coach is Andy Fewin.
