Elizabeth “Mae” Lessleyobit

CHETOPA—Elizabeth “Mae” Lessley, 88, of Chetopa, Kan., died at 2:20 p.m., Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Chetopa. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.

Mae was born May 13, 1921, in Chetopa, to Charlie and Hattie (Hurd) Miles. She grew up and attended schools in Chetopa and was a graduate of Chetopa High School.

She and Miles W. Lessley were married April 19, 1941. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1994.

She worked as a secretary for 30 years at Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, Okla. She also enjoyed writing articles for the Chetopa Advance for a number of years She was a member of the First Christian Church in Chetopa and its Christian Women’s Fellowship group, V.F.W. Auxiliary and Chetopa Senior Citizens.

Those surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Duane Lessley, on Sept. 14, 1984; and one brother, Frank Miles.

Frances Colleen (Mourning) Hess495156

ALTAMONT—Frances Colleen (Mourning) Hess, 94, of Altamont, Kan., passed away peacefully with family by her side at 10:25 p.m., Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, Parsons, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Altamont United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. Friends may call at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont after 11 a.m., on Wednesday.

Frances was born May 21, 1915, in Altamont, an only child, to Hezekiah and Mina Mae (Browning) Mourning. She graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont, received her BSED from Pittsburg State University and received her MS from Columbia University in New York City.

Frances was married to Abe Hess on April 9, 1944, in Altamont. For a time, they lived in Parsons before moving to Altamont, where they spent the remainder of their lives. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1987.

Before marriage, Frances taught business in Toronto, Kan., Eureka, Kan,, and Michigan. When she and Abe moved to Altamont, she taught seventh and eighth grade English at Altamont Grade School from 1961-1968. She then taught English at LCCHS from 1969-1981, retiring from there in May of 1981. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Culture Club, Bridge Club, and various other social clubs during her life.

Frances will be remembered for the love of her family, her dedication to her teaching, her affection for close friends and her fondness for numerous cats she had throughout her life. She loved to read and enjoyed quilting, sewing and oil painting.

Survivors include two daughters, Julie Oman and husband Brad, Altamont; Sherrie Willsie and husband David, Lincoln, Neb.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Oman Russell, Pittsburg, Kan; Jana Oman Ingram, Cheney, Kan,; Philip Willsie, Wilmington, Del.; Grant Willsie Lincoln, Neb.; three great-grandchildren, Tatum, Kinslee and Brody Ingram, Cheney.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Betty L. Walker

OSWEGO—Betty L. Walker 89, of Oswego, Kan., passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Oswego Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, in the First Baptist Church of Oswego with Pastor John Stone officiating. Interment will follow in the Oswego Cemetery under the direction of Murdock Funeral Home. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church with the Murdock Funeral Home 203 Illinois, Oswego, KS 67356, acting as custodian.

Betty was born April 7, 1920, in Oswego, the daughter of Edgar and Lulu Mae (Albin) Gray. She graduated from Oswego High School in 1938.

She married James J. Walker on April 6, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1983.

Betty enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oswego.

She is survived by two sons, Jim Wilks and wife Wanda, Branson, Mo.; and John Walker, Oswego; two sisters, Jean Snyder, Oswego; and JoAnn Lutz,  Caney; seven grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Luella Brown and Mary Amelia Coble.

Mary Opal Triebel

GRANDVIEW, Mo.—Mary Opal Triebel, 84, of Grandview, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Murdock Chapel in Oswego with Pastor John Stone of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Oswego Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association with the Murdock Funeral Home, 203 Illinois, Oswego, KS 67356, serving as custodian.

Mary was born July 15, 1925, to Ivy Amos and Ethel (Dunlop) Irwin in the McCune-Oswego area. She moved to Columbus with her family in 1944 and married Arthur A. Triebel on July 26, 1954 in Colorado Springs, Colo. She spent the rest of her life in Grandview, Mo., and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW since 1987.

Those surviving are a daughter, Lynn Parks and husband Fred, Raymore, Mo.; a son, Leon Taylor, Royce City, Texas; a step-son, Duane Triebel and wife Kay, Elk City, Kan.; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Martha; four brothers, Marvin, Vernon, Leland and James.

Lynwood A. “Lynn” Manues

PARSONS—Lynwood A. “Lynn” Manues, 76, of Parsons, Kan., died at his home at Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, was on his 76th birthday.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, at the Arvon Phillips Community Center’s Community Room.

Burris D. Milliron

PARSONS—Burris D. Milliron, 86, of Parsons, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at his home. He had been in failing health.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. ,Thursday, at Buffalo Cemetery in Buffalo. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
