The Altamont City Council met in their newly expanded meeting room last Thursday evening, Dec. 10. The wall between the old meeting room and the room to the east was removed nearly doubling the space. Improved lighting and carpeting were installed. The public is invited to attend a meeting and see the new facilities. Read more

Approves retirement of eight classified staff members

The Board of Education of Labette County USD 506 held its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14 at the Board of Education office in Altamont.

Notice was given recently of a $80,434 grant was approved for 911 update in Labette County.
According to Brandy Grassl, 911 Director, the wireless grant will be used for updating some of the equipment next year, Grassl gave an update stating that January through November that of the 10,248 calls, 9,051 of them were wireless calls. That is 88 percent 911 wireless calls compared to 72 percent the year before. “It is a growing trend,” she said.
At the end of the year over 40,000 logs will have been entered on CAD. These are incident calls such as medical, fire, dogs, etc. The EMTs have 3,200 runs so far this year.

USD 504 superintendent submitted a letter of resignation at Monday’s board of education meeting held in Oswego.
After 40 years in the field of education, 19 of those years with USD 504, Supt. Terry Karlin plans to retire at the end of fiscal year, July 1, 2010. Read more

Six more selected honorable mention

The Oswego High School football team has yet to close its books on a successful 2009 season, with two state newspapers announcing All-State selections including seven OHS players.
Michael Bullard, OHS senior, was named as linebacker to 1st Team All-State Class 2-1A by both the Topeka Capital-Journal and the Wichita Eagle.

Michael is the son of Chris Brannin, Oswego and John Bullard, Columbus.
