Cook, Flatt and Stoebel, engineering firm, received signatures on a engineering design contract for Bridge #800 at Monday’s county commission meeting, in the amount of $31,150 to be taken out of the special bridge fund. They will replace the bridge decking and will be closed 60-90 days for repair. The original bridge was built in 1978 and is located .75 miles east and 1.1 miles south of Parsons.

Labette County lost a native son in his fight for freedom with the U.S. Army last Saturday.
Pentagon sources said E4 Daniel Cox, who was raised in Parsons, died in Afghanistan as he fulfilled his duties with the 10th Mountain Division.

Jordan K. Russell, senior at Oswego High School,  drew the winning logo for this year’s Oswegofest buttons, She said it took her about two hours to design it. Russell designed the logo for last year’s Renaissance t-shirts and has won various art awards at the fair and in school. She is the daughter of Jason and Wendy Russell of Oswego. The banks will also be selling the Oswegofest buttons. These buttons cost $1.50 this year and there will be cash drawings for the lucky number.

There will be a public meeting at the new community center in Oswego on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., to discuss the plan for the ball fields and the types of volunteers needed, including earth moving, storm drain laying, placing and raking infields, re-positioning of sprinklers, fencing, time keeping, providing meals for volunteers on work days, etc.

Federal stimulus funds distributed across state of Kansas

USDA Rural Development State Director Patty Clark congratulated the seven Kansas recipients who may receive $25,219,500 for water and environmental projects, recently announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.  The Kansas water projects have been selected by USDA Rural Development to be funded by federal appropriations, provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
