Jerry A. Elder

ALTAMONT—Jerry A. Elder, 71, of Altamont, Kan., died at 6:11 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 3, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. Friends may call at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont to sign the register. The casket will remain closed.

Jerry was born June 5, 1938, in Parsons, Kan., to Claude “Art” and Evelyne (Luman) Elder. He grew up and attended schools in Altamont, was a 1956 graduate of Labette County Community High School, and a 1960 graduate of Pittsburg State College. While attending college, he worked at the Altamont Journal as a typesetter.

He and Kay Frances Wells were married June 12, 1960, at the Altamont United Methodist Church. Following marriage, they lived in Parsons where he worked at Burnette’s Printing, retiring from there in 2000. In 1984, they moved from Parsons to his family home in Altamont where they have lived since. He also worked as a cameraman for the Altamont City Council.

He was a member of the Altamont United Methodist Church and he enjoyed hunting, baseball, bowling and hockey, and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Elder, of the home; one son, Jeff Elder and wife Michelle, Girard; one daughter, Sonja Blalock and husband Andy, Edmond, Okla.; five grandchildren, B.J. Spear, Alan Spear, Christy Newton, Kasie Elder and Trisha Elder; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three infant siblings, Jack, Joe and Marilyn Elder.

Henry H. Heroldobit

EDNA—Henry H. Herold, 83, of rural Edna, Kan., died at 3:15 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, from injuries received in a farm-related accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Grace Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.

Henry was born June 26, 1926, in Spearville, Kan., to Louis G. Herold, Sr., and Cressie F. (Tubbs) Herold. As a young boy, he grew up on a farm south of Offerle, Kan., and, in 1932, moved with his family to the Altamont area where he attended schools and graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Army as a mechanic from 1944-1946 in Europe.  Following his discharge, he worked in Abilene, Coffeyville, and in 1948, began farming in the rural Altamont and Edna areas.

On Sept. 29, 1946, he married Pauline Scott at the First Baptist Church in Altamont.  She preceded him in death Dec. 4, 1998.

On Aug. 1, 2002, he and Neila (Olson) Buetow were united in marriage. She survives of the home.

Mr. Herold was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Altamont. He also was a member of Farm Bureau and, in earlier years, served as Director of Federal Land Bank. He enjoyed traveling, working on engines, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, David Herold and wife Suzann, Altamont; one daughter, Sharon Paul and husband Gary, Brownsburg, Ind.; four stepchildren, Mike Buetow, Blue Springs, Mo.; Shelly Bell and husband Don, Sapulpa, Okla.; Sandy Buetow, Sand Springs, Okla.; and Tammy Olson and husband Scott, Republic, Mo.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Helwig and husband Mark, Matt Herold, Chris Martin and wife Cristi, and Angie Nelson and husband Mike; six stepgrandchildren, Matt Buetow, Angie Buetow, Ben Howell and wife Tabi, Bronwen Hamer and husband Michael, Amanda Shelton and husband Greg, and Jessica Mueller; give great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Lauryn and Madisyn Helwig; Avery and Alexis Nelson; seven step great-granchildren, Blaine, Gracie and Cooper Howell; Tyler Pressler, Chloe Shelton, Madison Hamer and Cadyn Smith; one brother, Kenneth Herold, Sr., and wife Ethel, Altamont; three sisters, Cleora Borgman, Grand Prairie, Texas; Lucretia Cabias, Santa Monica, Calif.; and Margaret Lansdowne and husband Robert, Manhattan, Kan.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Louis G. Herold, Jr.; one granddaughter, Cindy Herold; one stepson, Mark Buetow; and one step-grandson, David Mueller.

PARSONS—Doris E. Cook, 90, formerly of Mound Valley, Kan., died at 9:45 a.m., Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons, Kan. She had been in failing health.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Mound Valley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.

Doris was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Mound Valley, Kan., to Harry B. and Grace A. (Kaufman) Mayginnes. She grew up in Mound Valley where she attended school at Elmwood Elementary and was a 1937 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

She and Samuel M. Cook were married July 29, 1939, in Mound Valley.  Following marriage, they lived in Mound Valley until moving to rural Cherryvale in 1953 where they farmed until returning to Mound Valley in 1976. In later years, she moved to Independence, Kan., where she resided at Eagle Estates Assisted Living.

Through the years, she sold Avon, enjoyed reading and sewing. She was an active member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.

Those surviving are three sons, Kenneth L. Cook and wife Mary, Wichita; Bryant Cook, Independence; and Harry Cook, Wichita; one daughter-in-law, Mary Cook, Bartlesville, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald Mayginnes, Winfield, Kan.; Paul Mayginnes, Columbia, Mo.; and  J.B. Mayginnes, Andover, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Cook, in May 1980; and one son, Norval Cook.

Harry “Butch” D. Beggerly

MIAMI, Okla.—Harry “Butch” D. Beggerly of Miami, Okla., went to heaven on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at Springerville, Ariz. He was 61. At the time of his death, he was doing what he loved, hunting.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, at First Christian Church in Miami. Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Butch Beggerly Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of First National Bank of Miami or Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami.

Butch was a loving husband, father, grandfather, a dedicated teacher, coach, avid hunter and Christian. He was deeply loved. Online condolences may be made at www.paulthomasfuneralhomes.com.

Butch was born Feb. 9, 1948, in Parsons, Kan., to Harry J. and Maxine E. (Portrum) Beggerly. He attended school in Parsons and graduated from Pittsburg State University with a bachelor of science degree in education. He also earned his master’s and education specialist degrees from PSU. He taught high school science at Baileyville for six years and then taught biological sciences in Miami, Okla., until his retirement. He then taught in Chetopa and was teaching in Welch, Okla., at the time of his death. In all, he taught 37 years.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Miami, attending regularly. He belonged to several education associations throughout his teaching career. He served as president of the Miami Association of Classroom Teachers and was currently president of the Welch Association of Classroom Teachers. He represented Oklahoma and Miami at the National Education Association conventions three different times.

He married Janet Barnard on Jan. 24, 1970, in Oswego. She survives of the home. They had been married 39 years.

Other survivors include two daughters, Abigail Wright and her husband, Heath, and their children, Dylan, 14, Haze, 7, and Cooper, 5, all of Ozark, Mo., and Stephanie Ann Spillman and her husband, Matt, of Miami, Okla., and their soon-to-be-born baby; and a sister, Harriet Butler and her husband, Gary, of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Katherine “Kathy” Bond

WEBB CITY, Mo.—Mary Katherine “Kathy” Bond, 47, of Webb City, Mo., passed away at 1:54 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. She is the granddaughter of Beecher and Katherine Campbell, Oswego, Kan.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at the First Baptist Church of Webb City, with the Rev. Johnny Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel.

John William Standridge

SPRING HILL—John William Standridge, 73, of Spring Hill, Kan., formerly of Parsons, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Bruce Funeral Home, 712 S. Webster, Spring Hill. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Harold Robert Pruette

COFFEYVILLE—Harold Robert Pruette, 98, of Coffeyville, Kan., died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Edna First Baptist Church in Edna, Kan. Interment will follow at North Edna Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home was in charge of arranements.

Bertis F. Johnson

ALTAMONT—Bertis F. Johnson, 88, of Altamont, Kan., died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at his home following a period of illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Sept. 7, at Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego with Rev. Larry Parker officiating. Rosary was Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Murdock Funeral Home Chapel, Oswego. Interment was at Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton, Kan.

Jacinta Marie Schibi

PARSONS—Jacinta Marie Schibi, the 6-day-old daughter of Patrick H. and Brooke E. (Volmer) Schibi, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Aug. 31 at Labette Health in Parsons.

There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. ,Wednesday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parsons. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.

Doris L. King

CHETOPA—Doris L. King, 79, of Chetopa, Kan., died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Chetopa Manor.

The family had a private service with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa.

Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa was in charge of arrangements.
