Mable Irene Davolt

OSWEGO—Mable Irene Davolt, 87 of Oswego, Kan., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, in the Murdock Chapel with Rev. Dake Shreffler and Rev. Joe David Davolt, Jr., officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherman City Cemetery. Family and friends will gather an hour before services at the funeral home for a time of visitation.

Irene was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Cherokee County, Kan., the daughter of Warren O. and Mary Grace (Howard) Davolt. She was a longtime employee of the Berry Garment Factory. Irene was an accomplished musician and traveled to many revivals where she played the piano. According to her journals, she was at revival services several times a week. Irene was a lifetime member of the Bible Holiness Church and attended church faithfully.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Irene is survived by a brother, Lloyd Davolt and wife Betty of Oswego; three nieces, Adonna Gregory of Bartlesville, Okla.; Shirley Matthews of Springfield, Mo.; and Mary Simmons of Independence, Kan.; six nephews, John Davolt of Moundridge; Joe Davolt of Independence; Thomas Davolt of Chanute; Larry Davolt of Cherokee; Ronnie Elkins of Oswego; and Delvin Davolt of Parsons.

Memorials may be made to the Bible Holiness Church.

Carl Eugene “Gene” Ventle

LABETTE CITY—Carl Eugene “Gene” Ventle, 66, of Labette City, Kan., died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Freeman Health West in Joplin, Mo.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Tom Heflin officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Murdock Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Thursday, and will proceed to the cemetery as a group.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 203 Illinois, Oswego.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Miracle Network with the funeral home serving as custodian.

Gene was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Oswego, the son of Carl Jacob and Audrey Louise (Strickland) Ventle. His father was killed in World War II during the Battle of the Bulge and Gene was raised by his stepfather, Merle J. Strickland. He graduated from Chetopa High School in 1961, where he was an avid athlete.

He married Glenda Clark on Aug. 5, 1962, at Miami, Okla. The couple have been married 47 years.

Gene was a heavy equipment operator in the area. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, boating, cooking and music. He was well known for growing the best corn and watermelons in the area. He was a member of the Labette Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Randy Ventle of Chetopa; two daughters, Carla Blackburn and husband Rocky of Parsons and Marla Cook and husband Rick of Oswego; seven grandchildren, Edie Barber and Korie of Ames, Iowa; Michael Ventle and Holly of Dennis; Craig Cook of Oswego; Justin Ventle of Chetopa; Broc Cook of Oswego; Rocky Blackburn Jr. of Parsons; and Jayly Cook of Oswego; and two great-grandchildren, Quaiden Ventle and Ella Louise Ventle of Dennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Helen M. Cannon-Brinkman

PARSONS—Helen M. Cannon-Brinkman, 74, of Parsons, Kan., died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the Friendship Baptist Church and these may be left at or mailed to the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 405 Main, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, 67357.

Pauline Owens

PARSONS—Pauline Owens, 86, a longtime Parsons, Kan., resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Windsor Place Nursing Home in Coffeyville following a lengthy period of failing health.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery patio. The casket will remain closed, and friends may call at Carson-Wall Funeral Home to register.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Charles Reedy Shaver

COLUMBUS—Charles Reedy Shaver, 58, of Columbus, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at First Assembly of God Church, Columbus. Burial will be in Shaver Family Cemetery, Fairmont, West Va.

Arrangements are under the direction of Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.

Jerry Lee Zwahlen

FARLINGTON—Jerry Lee Zwahlen, 68, of Farlington, Kan., formerly of Hallowell, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, of natural but sudden causes at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, Kan., with Brian Zwahlen and Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where friends may call after 10 a.m., Tuesday.  Interment will immediately follow at the McGonigal Cemetery in rural Crawford County with Flag Folding and Presentation by the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard.

Memorials are suggested to the Big Canyon Ranch Christian Camp, the Special Olympics in honor of Brayden Johnson, or the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, KS 66743.

Janice Marie (Zook) Walker

COLUMBUS—Janice Marie (Zook) Walker, 61, of Columbus, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Murdock Funeral Home with Galen Zook officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. Inurnment will follow at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Murdock Funeral Home to help with expenses.

Manuel C. Perez

PARSONS—Manuel C. Perez, 86, a lifelong Parsons, Kan., resident, died  Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at Parsons Foursquare Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas Children’s Service League.

Angelina Ramirez

PARSONS—Angelina Ramirez, 88, of Parsons, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Labette Health in Parsons.

Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the rosary.

Bobbie Lee Knowles

PARSONS—Bobbie Lee Knowles, 79, of Parsons, Kan., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home. He had been in failing health.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Galesburg with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post No. 74, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to Freewill Baptist Church or DaVita Dialysis Center and may be left at or sent to the funeral home, Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
