More than 100 international representatives from all over the world including Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and the United States, toured the Boss Tank facility in Oswego last Friday. The group also toured the Tank Connection Affiliate Group in Parsons and the Atec Steel Fabrication and Construction facility in Baxter Springs. These three facilities offer bolted and welded dry bulk and liquid storage tanks. Shown above is a large tank in the paint booth, some of the tanks are over 14-ft. diameter and 85-ft. in length.

The Labette County Farm Bureau will again make a highly visible presence at the fair.
The Farm Bureau Tent will be open at 6 p.m. each night Tuesday through Friday and featured attractions will be the 4-H Petting Zoo and Farm Fun Center.  Area youth and farm families will share a variety of animals at the petting zoo.  The Farm Fun Center provides activities and displays for all ages.  Members of Labette County Farm Bureau host activities at the FB Tent.

Matt Atteberry, executive director for Labette Center for Mental Health Services, was given the reassurance at Monday’s county commission meeting that the center’s budget probably won’t be cut this year.
Atteberry told the board that how state funds were cut $160,000 the last two years for mental health services. The center has 48 full time employees, 14 part-time; 44 of them live in Parsons and the remaining live in Labette County. The center has served 1777 clients in 2008, consisting of 908 male and 869 female and the average age is 25-44 year olds.

– Labette Health will host a group of hospital officials from Tahlequah, Okla., July 24 for a demonstration of the hospital’s state-of-the-art blood-banking system.

They will be accompanied by representatives of Wyndgate Technologies, manufacturer of the SafeTrace TX  blood-banking software and bar-coding technology that is used to track each of the 1,500 units of blood that pass through the Labette Health laboratory each year. Read more

An Oswego teenager, Stuart Keener, is in Denver auditioning for the ninth season of American Idol — along with 15,000 others.
Stuart and his family left on Friday for preliminary auditions which were set for Tuesday. Stuart is the son of Walter and Beverly Keener of Oswego and he is a 2009 graduate of Oswego High School.
Sunday was spent standing in line for hours to register, according to his father.

Finally, Altamont gets its new grocery store. Since the first of the year, Dean and Debbie Fouts have been working on their new store.
According to Debbie, the store will be housed in three 100-year-old buildings which needed a lot of repair before the store could be opened. The volunteers who came from everywhere in large numbers have helped tremendously to get the store open.

There are several special opportunities for youth 15 years and under, who are 4-H members and non-members, to enter in the open class divisions at the fair.
The public sometimes considers the fair only for 4-H members and adults; this isn’t true in Labette County. Youth have always been able to enter in all divisions, but there are divisions in “Clothing-Textiles”, “Foods”, “Photography”, “Special Crafts” and a new one this year–”Canning” especially for 15 years and under.
