Josephine L. Goulgoul

COLUMBUS—Josephine L. Goul, 79, of Columbus, Kan., died at 6:10 p.m., Monday, June 1, 2009, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.

Graveside services were held Thursday, June 4, at Cherokee City Cemetery in Cherokee, Kan., with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. E-mail condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.

The family suggest expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to WWII Veteran’s Memorial and/or the National Arthritis Foundation. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 611 S. East Ave., Columbus, KS 66725.

Josephine was born May 28, 1930, in Hallowell, Kan., to Clark P.F. and Mabel (Gilliland) Best. She attended area schools.

On July 5, 1951, in Benton County, Ark., she married Harry Goul, Jr. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2001.

Josephine worked as a switchboard operator when she was younger. She later worked for King Louie, Glen Berry and the Oswego Garment factories. In 1978, she started working for Ace Electric in Columbus as a small parts packer, where she retired in 1992.

Josephine attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Pat Spieth and husband Dale of Columbus; Kathy Price and husband Ed of Howard, Kan.; and Cheryl Kurtz and husband Dennis of Sparks, Okla.; a son, Kent E. Goul and wife Tammy of Miami, Okla.; along with seven grandchildren, Deena Kelley, Eric Spieth, Dewey and Drew Price, Rainy Hockenbrock and Chris and Josh Carroll; and eight great-grandchildren, Bryce and Reagan Kelley, Anna Marie Henson, Michael Ashton Spieth, Christian and Tanner Price, Madison Hockenbrock and Preston Ensley-Carroll.

James W. “Jim” Costin

ALTAMONT—James W. “Jim” Costin, 82, of rural Altamont, Kan., died at 11:35 a.m., Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Labette Health in Parsons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. The family will hold private committal services at a future date.

Memorials are suggested to the Altamont Library or Our Family Care Center. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.

Jim was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Derby, Kan., to James Walter Costin, Sr. and Georgia Katherine (Rueter) Costin. He grew up and attended schools in Derby and was a graduate of Derby High School.

In 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served until the end of the war. Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm in Derby where he lived until moving to Altoona, Kan., in 1962. He then moved to the Altamont area in 1974 where he had lived since. He was a farmer and rancher his entire life.

On Sept. 30, 1974, he and Phylis L. Peden were married in Coffeyville, Kan. She survives of the home.

Jim loved his Black Angus, horses and mules, and was able to do anything he set his mind to do. He was a Baptist.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Tim A. Costin and wife Leona, Altoona; and James A. “Jimmy” Costin and wife Nancy, Buffalo, Kan.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Isaac C. “Ike” Costin, Altoona; and Boyd R. Costin, Derby.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Costin; an infant brother, and three sisters.

Leota A. Vance

OSWEGO—Leota A. Vance, 83, of Oswego, Kan., passed away at 6 a.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Girard Hospital, Girard, Kan., after a year-long battle with cancer.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 12, at the Oswego Cemetery with Rev. Steve McBrien officiating. Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Murdock Funeral Home, 203 S. Illinois, Oswego.

Leota was born Feb. 27, 1926, to William Leroy and Lena Leota (Hemming) Marchbanks, on the family farm near Labette City, Kan. She attended rural schools and Oswego High School. She worked for the Army Ammunition Plant near Parsons three different times, retiring from there in 1991. She also worked for Koons Manufacturing, now Diamond Coach, for a few years.

In June 1944, she married Jesse “Wid” Vance at Labette City. He preceded her in death in 1979.

Surviving is one son, Richard Vance, Oswego.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were a brother, Dale Marchbanks; and a sister, Goldie Kemper.

Irene M. Harris

PARSONS—Irene M. Harris, 89, of Parsons, Kan., died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at her home. She had been in failing health.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, at Memorial Lawn Cemetery Patio under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

John Maclean Campbell

BEDFORD, Texas—John Maclean Campbell, 83, of Bedford, Texas, formerly of Parsons, Kan., died on Sunday, May 31, 2009, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of Forest Ridge Funeral Home in Hurst, Texas.

The family suggests memorials to pancreatic cancer research in memory of his daughter, Vickie Sue Campell Davisson.

William R. “Bill” Stallsmith

PARSONS—William R. “Bill” Stallsmith, 86, a longtime Parsons, Kan., resident, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.

Nellie L. Smith

PARSONS—Nellie L. Smith, 95, of Parsons, Kan., died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at the Elmhaven West Nursing Home in Parsons.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 6, at the Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday evening.

Mary Weitzel Mangan

WICHITA—Mary Weitzel Mangan, 80, a former Parsons, Kan., resident, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in Wichita.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday at the funeral home.

Gary R. Kendrick

PARSONS—Gary R. Kendrick, 64, of Parsons, Kan., died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. He had been in failing health over three years.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery at Muskogee, Okla. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Parsons.

The family suggests memorials to Faith United Methodist Church, Operation Bright Touch or the Labette Community College Foundation.

Lawrence S. Williams

TRENTON, N.J.—Lawrence S. Williams, 75, formerly of Parsons, Kan., died on Friday, May 22, 2009, at his Trenton, N.J., home.

Funeral services were Monday at Trenton Deliverance Church, Trenton, NJ. Burial was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, N.J., with full military honors.

Virginia R. Elsworth

PARSONS—Virginia R. Elsworth, 74, of Parsons, Kan., died Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Elmhaven East nursing home in Parsons.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at Memorial Lawn Cemetery Patio. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Parsons.

Joseph Frederick Robinson

COLUMBUS—Joseph Frederick Robinson age 89 of Columbus, Kan., died at Medicalodge of Columbus on June 7, 2009, after an illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, at the First Christian Church of Columbus with the Rev. Roger Beason officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery of Columbus. Family will have Masonic Rights said at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at the Simpson Funeral Home, 323 S. Kansas Ave., Columbus, with visitation going afterwards til 8 p.m.

Flossie J. Torchia

COLUMBUS—Flossie J. Torchia, 90, of Columbus, Kan., died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo.

Graveside Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, at Park Cemetery with Pastor Roger Beason and Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, in the Murdock Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Earle M. Ortgies

COLUMBUS—Earle M. Ortgies, 88, of Columbus, Kan., died Friday, June 6, 2009.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Park Cemetery with Rev. David Bendix officiating. Masonic Rites will be 7 p.m., Monday, in the Murdock Chapel under the direction of Prudence Masonic Lodge #100. Visitation will follow Masonic Rites.

Louise Fay Good

PARSONS—Louise Fay Good, 88, a lifelong Parsons, Kan., resident, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Labette Health. She had been in failing health the past two months.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
