Wheat harvest is well underway this week in Labette County, and local yields are reportedly lower than usual.
Perry Sorrell, CEO of Bartlett Co-op, said the wheat is in bad condition this year. The harvest only started last Friday which is rather late, so there is still a while to go. The yield is only four to five bushels per acre in some instances and goes up to the 20’s. The average would be 15 to 18 bushels per acre. The test weight is 52 to 53 which is not very good.

The annual spring picnic meeting of the Southeast Kansas Audubon Chapter was held at property owned by Steven Charles and Steve and Cheryl Lewis at the north edge of Oswego. Audubon members from Chanute, Erie, Pittsburg, Independence, Parsons and Altamont attended.
Some of those attending arrived early and explored the area either on foot or by vehicle.
The meal consisted of smoked chicken and hamburgers furnished and prepared by the hosts and non-meat foods and desserts brought by the members.

Following an elected officials and department heads special meeting to set guidelines and instructions in preparing their 2010 budgets on Monday, the county commissioners said there will be no pay increases in 2010 and they are not to figure any cost of living raises in their upcoming 2010 budget planning.
IN THE COMMISSION MEETING:
• Signed a resolution to appoint David Loiselle as the Labette County Appraiser effective July 1, 2009 until June 30, 2013. His pay will be $52,000 per annum and will be increased only when other county department heads get cost of living increases. His pay now is $46,000.

Editor:
I attended the joint Labette/Montgomery County Commissioners hearing on the potential closing of 24,000/6000 road (the old 160 highway) in the middle of two counties last Monday. I have to say a couple times I had flashbacks of the old Gunsmoke show and I was looking around for Marshall Dillon as the two sides stated their opinions in the middle of the road.
Seriously, I felt it was a productive meeting as the Labette County Commissioners asked questions of Montgomery County and voiced their opinions. All three of them had very good points and I commend and thank them for that. Read more

A task force of Oswego and area officials met again last Thursday to discuss the future of the Labette Correctional Conservation Camp facility.
The men’s camp is scheduled for closing after June 30 and this follows the closure of the women’s camp facility on Dec. 30 of 2008.
Task force members are brainstorming various ideas for using the camp facility to attract employment and continue to be a productive asset to Labette County where it has been a minimum security boot camp since 1991. Both camps are victims of a state funding crisis due to a severe downturn in the economy.

TO THE PUBLIC:
If you have an idea for alternative use of the LCCC facilities, call a task force member as soon as possible or come to the June 25 meeting at the camp.

See this week’s Labette Avenue for complete story.
