Weekend to bring visitors, friends and memories

Memorial Day services have been set for area communities this coming weekend.
The following observances will be  held in southern Labette County:

McKee Cemetery - Sunday
A 2 p.m. service will be held Sunday, May 24, at the McKee Cemetery. It will be followed by a brief meeting of the Cemetery Association.

Oak Hill Cemetery serviice
Chetopa Memorial VFW Post #10508 and its ladies auxiliary will host the annual Memorial Day service to be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m.

Oswego Avenue of Flags
A Memorial Day service is set for 9 a.m. Monday in the Oswego Cemetery.
Volunteers are needed for the Avenue of Flags in Oswego on Monday and they should report to the cemetery at 6:30 a.m., according to Lonie Addis of Oswego.
The volunteers will set out 263 flags and the memorial service will begin at 9 a.m. with Addis as master of ceremonies.
Pastor Steve McBrien of the Oswego Assembly of God will provide the prayer service.
Ron Schlatter will present the VFW wreath and Irm Alexander will present the VFW Auxiliary wreath in honor of veterans.
A firing squad commanded by Carl Wayne Strickland will give a salute to the dead and Taps will be played by Eagle Scout Brad Feagan.
Col. Jack Fewin will provide the sound system.
Volunteers will be needed to take up the 263 flags for storage later in the day at 5 p.m.

Edna Cemetery flags flying
T.W. Stone and many Edna residents gathered recently to put up flags at the Edna Cemetery it would look good for Memorial Day weekend. Local people have taken on this responsibility for many years and the cemetery is one of the most attractive in the area.

Flags to fly in other towns
Mound Valley is home to a downtown flagpole that will be raised by hometown residents this coming weekend in celebration of Memorial Day, and in honor of all veterans.
At Altamont, the flagpole in the Altamont Cemetery will be the focal point of attention for local residents who visit the well-trimmed cemetery.

Lake Creek Cemetery - Bartlett
Several Bartlett area people gathered at Lake Creek Cemetery last Thursday evening to put up Veterans’ Flags for the Lake Creek Avenue of Flags.
This is the eighth year for the flags. In 2002 there were 20 flags for Veterans buried at Lake Creek. This year 61 flags were put up.
Those helping were Tom and Jean Tullis, Bobbie and Jake Harms, Jamie and Linda Owens, Will Owens, Bill Owens, Marla Yarbrough, Terry Tullis, Velma Tullis, Travian Tullis and Brian Sanders.
