PARSONS, Kan. – A third case of Influenza A H1N1 has been confirmed in Labette County and two more are suspected, according to Labette County Health Department Director Debbi Baugher, R.N., and Labette Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Benjamin Cochran, R.N.

Cochran said that the third case is a 14-year-old male who came to Labette Health ExpressCare Monday, June 29 with flu-like symptoms. He was treated, but was not admitted. Two relatives, a 29-year-old male and a two-year-old male, have since come down with similar symptoms.

Confirmation of the third case was received this afternoon from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment laboratory in Topeka. This is the sixth confirmed case in Southeast Kansas. Read more

• Altamont fireworks show will be held Friday, July 3. Parking available behind Harrison Auditorium at LCHS.
• Chetopa all day festivities will be held on July 4 at the Veteran’s Park, East Maple St., around 9:45 p.m.
• Oswego fireworks celebration will begin at 7 p.m, at  the Labette County Fairgrounds, Rick Cook and band will perform, fireworks following.

Leaders give camp’s final graduation a positive touch

The largest graduation class of the Labette Correctional Conservation Camp was held last Friday, June 26. And it was also the last.

Two sqyads of 31 male inmates were released following a ceremony in their honor on Friday. They have been at the camp for five months and one week.

Wheat harvest is well underway this week in Labette County, and local yields are reportedly lower than usual.
Perry Sorrell, CEO of Bartlett Co-op, said the wheat is in bad condition this year. The harvest only started last Friday which is rather late, so there is still a while to go. The yield is only four to five bushels per acre in some instances and goes up to the 20’s. The average would be 15 to 18 bushels per acre. The test weight is 52 to 53 which is not very good.
