Primary election set for next Tuesday
Elk County voters will head to the polls next Tuesday, Aug. 5 to pare down candidates in the primary election.
Included will be races at the county, state and national levels.
Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Results will be posted on line at “taylornews.org.”
There are two contests in the primary at the county level.
One is the race for Elk County Commission, Dist. 3. Candidates are: Marion E. Reece of Moline, K.R. “Ken” Liebau of Grenola and Tyson L. Wilson of Moline. All three are Republicans.
The second contested race is for Elk County Clerk where incumbent Donna K. Kaminska of Longton, a Republican, is being challenged by Lisa J. Townsley of Moline, also a Republican.
Running unopposed is incumbent Elizabeth Hendricks of Howard for county commissioner in Dist. 2. Hendricks is a Democrat.
Candidates running unopposed for county offices are: Marla Foster Ware, Moline, Republican for county attorney; Deanna Jones, Longton, Republican for Elk County Treasurer; Neva L. Walter, Howard, Republican for Elk County Register of Deeds; and Doug Hanks, Howard, Democrat for Elk County Sheriff.
In judicial positions, Martina M. Hubbell of Howard and Kristin Hutchison, Howard, both Republicans, are seeking the office of Dist. Magistrate Judge, Dist. 13, Pos. 1.
Charles M. “Chuck” Hart of Andover, a Republican, is unopposed in his bid for Dist. Judge, Div. 2.
David A. Ricke, Rose Hill, a Republican, also is unopposed as he runs for Dist. Judge, Dist. 13, Div. 3.
Running for state representative from the 12th Dist. will be incumbent Jeff King, a Republican, and his challenger will be Sandra K. Frisco, Independence, a Democrat.
Derek Schmidt, Republican state senator, will run unopposed. Schmidt resides at Independence.
For U.S. Senator, incumbent Pat Roberts will be on the ballot as the lone Republican and Democratic voters may choose from a slate of two: Lee Jones of Overland Park or Jim Slattery of Topeka.
For U.S. Representative, Todd Tiahrt of Goddard is the only Republican on the ballot, and his challenger is Donald Betts Jr., a Democrat from Wichita.
Numerous township positions will also be on Tuesday’s ballot.
Because the Flint Hills Express is now printed on Tuesday evening, no results will be printed in next week’s edition. However, results will be posted at “taylornews.org” as they become available.
ADVANCED VOTING

Advanced voting for the upcoming Aug. 5 Primary Election is currently going on in the Elk County Clerk’s Office and will continue until noon on Monday, Aug. 4. The Clerk’s office hours are from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Courthouse is closed on Fridays, except for the District Court.
To date over 125 voters have been mailed ballots or have voted in the Clerk’s office.
The last possible day to call for a ballot to be mailed to your home is July 31 and that ballot must be returned by 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 to be counted.
Polling places on Primary Election Day are Howard Cox Building, Moline Community Building and the Longton Senior Center. Voting hours are 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
