Congressman Moran to speak at Farm Bureau meeting

U.S. Congressman Jerry Moran will be this year’s guest speaker during the Elk County Farm Bureau Association’s annual meeting.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Cox Community Building in Howard. Dinner will be served at 6:30, after which Mr. Moran will address the audience of Farm Bureau voting members and guests.

Moran, who represents the state’s 1st District, is serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. According to his official web site, “There are fewer advocates for issues unique to rural communities” than Moran, whose work focuses on legislation that will allow Kansas farms and ranches to remain viable.” He is a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee and ranking member of the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management. He is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He also helped to lead the Rural Health Care Coalition, which focuses on the retention and funding of rural hospitals and health-care providers.

The association’s business meeting will follow Mr. Moran’s comments. Nominations for board members Jerry Dellinger and Charles “Chuck” Norris will be presented for approval. The association also will approve delegates for the KFB annual meeting in November.

Also during the meeting, John and Sheila Huntington will be recognized as Elk County’s Farm Family of the Year for 2008.
