Sedan’s Les Davis named to Kansas Sports Hall of Fame
SEDAN — Retired Sedan High School sports coach Les Davis is among 10 members of the 2008 class of inductees into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
The hall, located in Wichita’s Old Town business district, will induct the 2008 class in a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Davis retired from coaching in 2005 after spending 44 years in the high school coaching ranks, 35 of which were in Sedan. During that time he posted more than 300 football coaching victories (second most in Kansas high school football), more than 670 wins in basketball and 512 wins in baseball.
Other inductees into the hall include former New York Yankees Ralph Terry and Mike Torrez, and Dave Robisch, a former NBA player and All-American at University of Kansas. Others will include Dick Knostman, an All-American basketball star at Kansas State; Ronald Moore, a football running back from Pittsburg State; and Deb Richard, winner of five LPGA events.
Phil Stephenson, an NCAA baseball player of the year in 1982 at Wichita State, and Paul Lindblad, a major league pitcher who played on three championship teams, will be inducted as will veteran sports broadcaster Gary Bender.
The induction is a day-long event with the actual ceremony taking place at 7 p.m., at the Wichita Airport Hilton. Other events will be held at the hall, located at 238 N. Mead.
The hall currently has 166 inductees who have posted outstanding achievements in some form of athletics in the high school, college, amateur or professional ranks. Among the noted members of the hall of fame include 1988 Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders, former Kansas State University basketball player and coach Lon Kruger, Coffeyville native and major league baseball pitcher Walter Johnson, and Olympic distance runner Jim Ryan.
