Fair time in Elk County!
It’s fair time in Elk County! Once again the 62nd annual fair will be held in Howard. It all begins on Thursday, July 17, with the entering of open class exhibits at 8 a.m. The judging will begin at 10 a.m.
The big evening show will feature the one and only Jana Jae. Jana has been on television and radio. A regular on the Hee Haw Show, she is “The First Lady of Country Fiddle.” She is a unique performer with music of country, western swing, pop and classical. She will delight audiences of all ages. She will be accompanied by her mulit-talented band, “Hotwire.” There will also be a food auction during the intermission.
Friday evening, July 18, you can enjoy all the free watermelon you can eat beginning at 7 p.m. This will be sponsored by Southern Kansas Insurance Agency, Daryl Metcalf and Dave’s Enterprises, Dave Helsel. At 8 p.m., the first night of the fair rodeo will begin. Hebb Rodeo Company will be the stock contractor.
On Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m., the Howard Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the big fair parade in downtown Howard. Approximately $250 in prize money will be given to the winners of the different categories. Following the parade at 11:45 a.m., the turtle races will be conducted at the fair grounds. Bill and Patsy Lanning of Lanning’s Auto Supply will sponsor these races. So kids start catching those turtles and be ready for the races!
In the afternoon from 1-3 p.m., the family fun and games will be enjoyed by all in front of the grandstand. At 6:30 p.m., the annual “Free BBQ and Bean Feed” will be served. The second night of the fair rodeo will start at 8 p.m.
Everyone is encouraged to pick out some of the many activities and attend the fair for some fashioned Elk County fun.
