Memorial Day weekend activities in Elk County
During the Memorial Day weekend, visitors to the Moline Cemetery will be inspired by the beautiful Avenue of Flags that stands tall in the well manicured cemetery. Small brass plates accompany most of the flag poles, bearing names of organizations or individual family members who have paid for the flag and pole in honor or memory of a special person.
There are a few poles still available which may be purchased by anyone desiring to do so. While in Moline and visiting the cemetery, feel free to call or visit with Russell Julian (647-3357) or Wanda Mills (647-3462) about purchasing a flag and pole.

The American Legion Carter-Rader Post # 149 and the Ladies’ Auxiliary will be busy all weekend. On Friday and Saturday, May 23-24, the Ladies’ Auxiliary will be distributing poppies on Wabash St., which are in memory and support of our veterans especially at the Winfield Veteran’s Home.
On May 26, Memorial Day, all volunteers who are helping to put up flags at the cemetery are invited to coffee and rolls at 6:30 a.m. at the Cox Building. Carolyn Wilnerd, newly elected President of the Ladies’
Auxiliary and Evelyn Pritchett are the hostesses, and the specialty will be delicious home-made cinnamon rolls being made by Pansy Beck. Then the volunteers will meet at 7 a.m. at Grace Lawn Cemetery to put up flags. The American Legion has put up 17 more flag poles this year; so the presentation will be dramatic.
The memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. We will be honoring the American Legion members, Ladies’ Auxiliary members and local veterans who died this year.
There will be a Basket Dinner at noon at the Cox Building. Hostesses are Karen Indermill, Jane Vinette, Kate Perkins, and Neva Walter. All are requested to bring a covered dish.
Then the final activity of the day will be the solemn lowering of the flags at 4:30 p.m. at the Grace Lawn Cemetery. All volunteers will be appreciated.
And our sincere thanks to all you take the time to honor our veterans who gave so unselfishly for our nation and our future security.
