The annual Elk County Health Fair will be Saturday, May 3 at the West Elk High School in Howard from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Tests and screenings that will be available are:
Lipid Profile — $7 (Do not eat for 12 hours prior to test. Results include Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Glucose and Triglycerides)
Basic Metabolic — $6 (Do not eat for 12 hours prior to test. Results include Sodium, Potassium,
Chloride, Calcium, Carbon Dioxide, BUN, Creatinine and Glucose)
CBC — $4.50 (Broad screening test that serves as a screen for general health. It is the calculation of the cellular portion of the blood especially on the concentration of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets)
PSA — $11 (Male prostate cancer screening)
TSH — $12 (Thyroid screening)
CEA — $16 (Used mainly as a tumor marker, especially with intestinal cancer such as colon or rectal. Other possible cancers are of the pancreas, stomach, breast, lung and certain types of thyroid and ovarian cancer)
The Elk County Council on Aging will be providing $40 gift certificates for a $5 donation to help seniors age 60 and older to pay for their tests and screenings. Gift certificates will be on a first come, first serve basis as funds are limited.
Area providers will have booths set up with health information. The Extension Homemaker Units will provide refreshments of muffins, coffee and juice. The muffins will be made by Elk County 4-H Club members. The Elk County Health Fair is sponsored by the Greenwood County Hospital, Bluestem Medical Clinic - Howard Branch and Elk County Extension Council.
